Replacing Stereo Receiver w/AV REceiver

I want to replace my stereo receiver with a new AV Receiver which will become a component of a home theatre system. Currently, I'm looking at the Onkyo TX-574.

Can anyone tell me if the sound quality will be just as good on the AV receiver, as it was on my stereo receiver? I'd like to know if I can just turn on 2 channels to play CDs in stereo, rather than playing music through all 7speakers.

Thanks!

I just have an old Technics Stereo receiver with a CD player hooked up to it.

Good to know that I can switch to just 2 channels for stereo with the Onkyo.

I'm slowly building my home theatre system. Will need to get a DVD player -- considering the ONkyo HDMI DVSSP-404. I'm assuming that I can play CDs on it too....just wanted to make sure the sound quality would be intact like my stereo receiver/cd player.

thank you!

Since you are looking for HT integration, I'd suggest waiting a few month until the new receivers come out with the HDMI 1.3 interface that will decode the lossless DD/DTS on the HD dvds that are starting to make a dent in HT and certainly will be mainstream in a few years. No new format on the horizon, so this will be a safe bet. Plan ahead.

Check the features. Most receivers have a stereo mode that gives you 2 channel sound without any digital signal processing. Yamaha calls it Straight Stereo. Sound quality will be as good as your stereo receiver for Cds. Sometimes the DSP modes can do a nice job synthesizing surround sound from 2 channel sources although I find that I need to run through the various modes in order to find the right one. Often I end up back in Stereo.

I think that just about all receivers have that these days. Denon calls it "pure direct" I think. It's nice to have the choice so you can have 2.1 sound or 2.0 depending on one's preferences.
