Replacing my Sony STR-DG720 Help

Hello, this is my first time posting here but have often used this website and forums to help advance my understanding but even with all this knowledge I'm still a little confused.

I just bought a Denon AVR-S710W (75W per channel) [Has not arrived yet] to replace my Sony STR-DG720 (95W per channel). We are just now completing our first Projector setup, getting rid of our Rear Projection TV, and I've noticed higher frequency distortion on voices while watching many movies on the Sony receiver. At first I thought it was the Polk CS10, but after running many tests determined it was the A/V Receiver either from bad settings or bad equipment. We have long since lost the manual and I didn't want to haggle with these confusing settings with no on screen menu.

Therefore I decided to just replace it. My question is, will the Denon AVR-S710W meet my needs to give me big and high quality sound despite the lower wattage? I'm no audiophile [yet] but I can still appreciate good sound and want to make sure this new receiver is at least equal or better in performance to my older Sony. After reading that many older receivers can still be great quality I don't want to upgrade to some cheaper and low quality receiver to what I have. Although all my research points to it being a good receiver, I would be willing to upgrade further if need be.

The Denon will be at least as good as the Sony STR-DG720 but if you want better sound you may want to step up to the AVR-X3200 that you should be able to get for well under 1K as the 3300 will be out in a few months. The 3200, being a current model, does have the latest features.

This last year's model offers top sound quality and comes with Audyssey XT32. You won't have HDCP2.2, that affects 4K in certain way but may not be an issue for you.

Regarding the Sony, as a last ditch effort, you should try to do a processor reset and see if that annoying noise would go away.

Marantz fan here, but Denon has been very good of late too. If I were to pick up an AVR right now, it would for sure be between Marantz and Denon.

Thank you both for your quick and helpful replies. Full UHD is something I am looking for so I will need HDCP 2.2. Through Amazon, the Denon AVR-X3200W is available for $650 for a refurbished model. Although it cuts the warranty short, it does look like a good deal.

This is right where I wanted to spend so if it's a good option I'll gladly move over to the 3200.

EDIT: Didn't notice that the refurbished unit ships between 1-4 months. This will make me rethink everything.

AC4L is an authorized dealer. You'll either get a full manufacturer's warranty on an open box or a specificed (usually 1yr) one even on a refurb.

I didn't state my intended use before, but it's just for movies. Mostly Blu-rays. I'm looking at the Marantz 5010 and since the Denon 3200 is out of stock at AC4L along with many others I may just get the 5010.

Although since many people seem to like their Denon 710s I may just keep it when it arrives. I wish I could just buy everything and pick my favorite.

Try out the 710 first - it may suit your needs just fine.
