replacement woofer

Hello,
I've got a cheap Polk psw505 sub that I use in my workshop which oddly enough i listen to more than i do my home theatre.

The woofer is blown and i'd like to replace it.
I'm wondering what would happen if i put a cheap car audio woofer in the box. Any ideas?
This is by no means a quality system I just want some thump while I'm working.

Subs, and all systems with bass drivers, are designed so that the driver, the box size, and possibly the internal amp (which might have boost built in) are designed to work with each other.

You can probably find a driver that will fit in the box but whether or not it will perform as well as the original is questionable.

Your best bet would be to contact Polk and see if they could provide a replacement driver.

I also have a spare plate amp i could put in. A Bash 500s. if that would make a difference.
I understand i would need to find something designt to work with the size of the box and i know the specs of the amp too. so theoretically that should work.

So, basically a car audio woofer would work?

Oh, it'll work all right. It's just how well it'll work that's in question.

Also, make sure the impedance of the two driver is the same. A lower impedance could blow the amp.

Polk will charge you a arm and a leg! Car audio has come a long way. They know their sh-- about sub's also.Your talking in the shop. Go to eBay buy a sub of same inpedence and about the watts and Rock-on!

This sub's for your workshop not your living room,Right? I was under the impression you wanted to fix it on the cheep.

Thanks for the input everyone. I went the cheap route and picked up a car audio sub with the right impedance and box size specs for a measly $50. It worked great! its all i need in the workshop.

I am glad my advice worked out for you. Building a new cabinet and all that high dollar advice you where given just wasn't realistic for a workshop. Rock on!
