Hey guys. One more thing. We just got a new tv, so I figured that I would consider buying a decent sub (and I emailed RS today with a price request anyway). I like the looks of that advent 1200, it seems to be on a big sale, but am worried about the "you get what you pay for" thing. THe new tv will be in a smaller room, so power won't be too needed, but I'd like one of decent quality. Is the advent a well-built unit?

I also saw this in parts express. In the catalog, it says 300w all over the description, but online it is the exact same text, but with 150w inserted (a correction, I'd imagine). Would I be better off with that or the advent?

I'm just afraid that the inexpensive advent would be aimed at people who don't know what they are doing (which I try not to be). Thanks

Tyler
That dayton gets raves on every forum I read. For the price, people love it. I have heard of that advent, but have not heard it. I'd go with the dayton if you can afford it, then you can throw out that realistic one!

I just ordered the Advent from amazon; I couldn't beat the price and the free shipping (especially the shipping).

Thanks for all the pointers.

Any reason that sub is so cheap? Is the quality poor? Even on a budget, I hate buying low-end equipment, as it usually costs more in the long run. But if it is a decent product I'd buy it.

So new sub is the way to go, rather than just a new driver?
I know you've already gone with the Advent, but I'd thought I'd answer this question for others thinking of a basic entry level sub. The Advent is priced the way it is because of the driver (most likely a very small magnet, very little driver movement-Xmax), the amp's size, and the thickness of the MDF.

What Advent (Audiovox) has done is engineered a very efficient, decent subwoofer based on a high spl driver and inexpensive amp. This sub won't go below the 30Hz range, but it should play loud, and hit nicely. You won't find a HTIB subwoofer for this type of value. Here's the mfg. website:

thanks.

Radioshack emailed me back and told me that part has been discontinued.
I guess that sub will go into the basement until I see a nice cheap driver somewhere, or order something large online so I don't have to pay shipping for just a driver. I'll get one of the 15 dollar ones from somewhere, the OEM one couldn't have been of much higher quality.

tyler711,
I feel your pain. I have a nice looking dbx 15" sub with a blown woofer that I had to look for a few months to find proper replacement drivers.

My enclosure is ~2cubic feet, non-ported, and passive. So I had to get a external amp...which of course needs to somewhat match the speaker.

I decided on MB Quartz (PWE 352/354 or RWE 352/354), and a Dayton (DVC385-88) for my replacement drivers. And I got a free 130w x2 ch (at 8ohm) amp to service it.

Anyways, hopefully the Advent works out for you. Let us know.

Amazon is amazing. I ordered it late on Wednesday night, and I got home today (Saturday) and it was on my front porch! And that was with free "Super Saver" slow shipping. Haven't had a chance to hook it up yet, though.
