Hi i have an old Akai AM-UO1 Amp, and one channel was not working, while the other was very quiet. i opened her up and one capacitor of a pair is slightly swollen and when tapped produces a noise on the non working channel. I am asking if they cause issues like this and what would be a suitable replacement/upgrade. also is the old girl worth it? i asked awhile ago but only recently had another look and found the capacitor. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

I used to own the Akai AM-UO2 integrated amp. I was driving speakers A with B at the same time, and crink the volume to max.
Of course I blew it. It was not made to do this, but I was younger then...
I get rid of it, and I replaced it at that time with the first Pioneer Dolby Pro Logic, the VSX-9300s (sans center amp).

Akai, like our amps are just old farts now. Get rid of it and buy a new integrated amp or receiver.
Look at Denon in particular, and also at Yamaha and Marantz. They still make very nice Stereo integrated amp for very little money.
I own a Denon PMA-250 integrated amp, and I just love it. It's quite old, but sounds brand new. Look at what they are offering now (I'm not sure), and also look at the integrated amps from Yamaha, they have an excellent sound and reputation. If I will buy another stereo integrated amp today, I will seriously consider Yamaha.

But please, get rid of your AM-UO1. It will cost you more to try getting it fix than buy another better one.

Cheers,

Bob

I found that sometime it is better to give up some projects that seem too, how can I say, not worth it, and get some cheap stuff for only a few dollars (from $5 to $40), like turntables, old receivers, old DVD players or CD players, etc., and then to put them in their original shape and operating conditions.
I do quite a bit of that, and I really enjoy. I fix a very nice Pioneer turntable ($2), a Sony Linear drive turntable ($3), a very expensive Onkyo tape deck ($8), a Teac tape deck ($5), etc. Few receivers too, an old very nice Kenwood ($15), A Marantz classic tuner ($10), another tuner by ICC electronics ($4), etc. VCRs are tougher to repair, and I lost interest, now that we're with blu-ray. But it's fun to do (less so when you have to change the entire transport or the video heads).
It's tough also to get the right parts for older components, even with connections from Japan, China, Germany, France, Britain, USA, Canada, Finland, Netherlands, Singapore, Brazil, Portugal, Sweedish, and many more.
I've been at it for quite a while, so I'm getting use to only fix the worthwile stuff that can be of more use for myself, family, friends, for gifts, presents, birthdays, kids, etc.
You need a few tools to test the various circuits, and parts access for replacements, resistors, caps, transistors, attenuators, transformers, light bulbs the right size, the right amperage, fuzes same, etc.

Anyway have fun trying, because it is rewarding when you succeed.

And by the way, New Zealand is where they made a movie about me. Beautiful country indeed. Say Hi to Peter from me.

How many watts per channel is the AM-UO1?

And what is the capacitance (microfarads) of that cap (I figure that there are two of them inside that Akai)?

its 30w per channel as far as i can find @ 8 ohms, although the two analoge watt meters on the front go up to 50w. the capaciter rating is 4700 uF, 35 volts, 85 degrees celcius. says negative black on it. and yes two side by side.

Yep, those Akai amps had very little power supplies, with small transformers too. And only 9,400uf total at 35 volts is pretty small capacitance.

Interesting, because I tought that my AM-UO2 was 40 watts RMS per channel at 0.2% THD or so. So normally the AM-UO1 should be closer to about 25 watts per channel or so. I'll have to check for this to confirm. Yep, the AM-UO1 is 25 watts per channel into 8ohms at 0.3% THD. And the analog level meters going to 50 does confirm the actual 25 watts (meter always indicated double of actual power delivery).
Also my AM-UO2 has dual power supply, that's why I was running two set of speakers back then; but by turning the volume into clipping (there was a red clipping light indicator), I blew out my amp (constant buzzing sound).
But for the time that I have my Akai AM-UO2, I enjoy it and use it in many parties.
And my AM-UO2 has digital meter level indicators going up to 80 watts, so the actual total power was 40 watts per channel.
The UO-1 was back in 1980, so the UO-2 was from 1981.

Ya, I bought a bunch of electronics at thrift stores and Salvation Army stores.
And a soldering iron should be an accessory part of any audio enthusiast.

By the way, how's Peter doing? ;)

Well, he's probably working with Guillermo Del Toro on "The Hobbit".
I think this is a big project too, like two films made together (one after the other).

I'll bet he'll pop up in NZ. So, when you do see him, say HI from LOTR, would you please. ;)
