Refurb H/K AVR235 received; am I too critical?

Well, perhaps I spoke too soon.

I just got an e-mail from them, and after a round of replies, here's what's happening. They are going to replace the unit. They were very apologetic and very nice. They said that they'd be more than happy to just replace the remote and manual if that's all i'd like, but when considering the list of problems I had, they'd like to just get me another unit. So that's cool. And, they included a pre-paid label, so no shipping costs for me. I just have to print it out, slap it on and send it UPS.

I guess the downside is that I'll be without a receiver for the amount of time it takes to get out there, the checking in and processing, and the amount of time it takes for a new one to arrive (by ground, I'm thinking this is going to be a nearly 2 week process all told). However, if it means getting a replacement that i'll hopefully be more happy with, I guess that's a small price to pay.

Good News! Keep us posted on the replacement.

Thanks guys.

But this story takes a new twist.

Tonight, as I was looking it over, thinking about pulling it out to get it boxed up. I took a look at the blemishes and wondered: "well, i'm sending it back...i wonder if I could try to clean it up some beforehand, just to see." Wouldn't you know it–with a soft cloth, mild detergent and a little elbow grease, I'd estimate that 80% of the "blemishes" I was bugged by came out. I'd take a pic, but I won't bore you...suffice it to say, it looks pretty darn good now. The stuff around the "bass" knob seems like it had maybe just been some oils from someones fingers. Same for a lot of the blemishes on the front. That's all gone now, replaced by that super cool H/K silver look. The white part that looked like a bit of paint or grease pencil also came completely out. The only thing really left are these 2 small marks where the finish has worn off a little. But they're pretty tiny. And now that they're not surrounded by everything else, they're virtually unnoticeable.

So, I now faced a dilemma–send it back or keep it. Faced with struggle of walking 35+ lbs of box/receiver to my local UPS and having to wait upwards of two weeks, I think I may just hold onto this one. I may just request the manual/remote and be done with it.

Boy....I really feel silly. Why didn't I think of trying that in the first place.

Glad it's working out for ya.

I didn't expect H/K to argue about the manual and remote but I WAS surprised that they would knowingly send you a unit that looks like it spent time in a war zone on the losing side.

Since it cleans up pretty good and works 100%, you might want to consider your option of just going for the manual and remote. Each time you reach into the refurb jar, you take another chance plus you'll not have to disconnect, pack up, ship and go w/o a receiver.

again, glad it worked out

Same reason why I didn't try seeing if there was a protective film over the black plastic faceplate when I wanted to return my unit...

It'll be an inconvenience, but just send it back. If you don't, you'll be second guessing your decision every time you see one of the blemishes (albeit minor now) or something cosmetic you didn't notice before... -TD

I read through this thread just now. I was going to suggest trying to clean the front panel. I have 2 kids, and a refurb 330 I got last year for $250, so I know about fingerprints on electronics. The HK models are especially bad because they have the silver stainless stell look (I'd never get a SS fridge because it would look dirty all the time with my kids).

I was going to suggest trying to clean it, then saw you already had. :D

I used to sell audio equipment and when I first saw the pics of the receiver, I thought to myself, "Sheesh, I've never seen a refurb look as bad as that one does!"

I had assumed, incorrectly, that you had already given it the damp cloth treatment, since refurbs are known to be kind of "funky" sometimes, and fingerprints are common. I'm glad to see it cleaned up nicely, and if it was me, I would probably just keep it, and get the manual and remote replaced.

My friend bought a Pioneer (Don't remember the model anymore) high end receiver about 5 years ago. The box was delivered to me, since he was out of town and he told me to play with it to make sure it was ok. Well, the box was perfect, the manual and remote appeared to be new, but the receiver itself was a mess, dirty, smeared with greasy fingerprints, and it had the same odd smell that a local middle eastern meat market had, kind of smoky and spicy.

I cleaned it up, and got it looking 100% new, but the smell....:(

I ran it in my basement for a week long torture test and it passed with no problems. My friend comes home, and I tell him about the smell and he's all worked up, he's going to send it back, etc. Then he comes over and says, "Hey, it smells just like my Grandma's kitchen!" He was right. He still has it today, and it still stinks, but it works fine.

Glad to see HK is on the ball these days, I had long long waits getting them to fix or replace anything back when I sold it, in the middle 70's.

Ha, that's funny. Where were you in the beginning of this thread?! ;) :D

Yeah, I think I'm just going to get the manual and remote sent to me. The unit looks perfectly fine now. And, I know it's not long term, it was just a stop-gap for now, and a good one at that.

Well, I haven't been back here for a long while, and just kind of got back into the HiFi/HT thing when I finally cracked and bought a new TV after only 24 years. So far, I'm kind of out of control, as I've bought a Sharp 37' LCD TV, 2 pairs of speakers, and a new Yamaha Receiver(The el cheapo Sony I have can't take running all five speakers when things get cranked up) in less than a month. It looks like I'm going to be buying a new center channel to match the two new front speakers I bought later this week (SVS, if I like the pair coming tomorrow for the fronts, if not, they will be rear surrounds). I have some old AR towers in the living room, but in a 12'X12' room, they are just too big, so I'm going with small fronts/center/surrounds with a sub for now anyway. I'm trying to blend my old stuff with the new as much as I can, but most of it's going to go back on the PC, and I'll just buy new speakers all around for HT.

Most of the refurb stuff I have seen lately are LCD TVs and laptop computers. Some looks the same or very close to new, some looks horrible. Glad to see all your problem was just a case of the slimy fingers. There's a local place that "refurbs" Dell laptops mostly, and they are a joke. If you got a fairly current laptop that worked and looked "ok" from this place, you would be overjoyed, as it's rare. I went and looked at their stuff years ago, and found the same thing in nearly new condition, for half the price, with a 6 month, versus the local place's 30 day warranty. That laptop still works fine, and except for a scratch it had on the lid when I got it, it still looks new.

3. The unit itself smelled a little off. I can't place it, but it smelled kind of like smoke. Not a huge deal, but it was not pleasant to open it up and smell that. The scent has since dissipated, but it still wasn't a nice greeting.
I also purchased a refurb HK from eBay, the AVR 240, a couple of months ago. While in use for extended periods of time for the first week for break-in, the unit gave off a "smoky" smell. After the first week, the smell disappeared.

I ended up returning the 240 because of a big/deep scratch across the front of the unit. Picked-up a new HK 635 from a local retailer on clearance.

If it was the "glass", or if it was on stainless steel or brushed aluminum that was scratched, you probably could have gotten 99% of the scratch out, or made it nearly invisible using the "gleem" toothpaste method. You go out and buy a tube of Gleem and use it, a tiny bit of water, and your finger as a polisher and if you take your time, polish out the scratches. About the only thing it won't work on is an LCD panel. It even works to remove those little tiny "wear" scatches that plastic gets. Any other abrasive toothpaste works too, but Gleem seems to be the best, if you can find it.

I have "saved" many a piece of equipment over the years doing it, mostly handheld scanners. When it's a clear glass or plastic panel, it's really easy, but when it's a brushed surface, it's got additional steps and takes "technique" that has to be aquired over time. I had a really nasty looking scanner that had a huge gouge in the front, and after an hour, I had it to the point it looked new, except for one tiny area I couldn't fix.

A side benifit is the minty smell left behind!:D

Cory,

I got mine the same way from ebay HK Direct, and in fact I also got a 135 too! Both of them smelled a bit off as you said for about 2-3 weeks. I broke them in well and it went away. Mine both showed up perfect, the plastic clear protector was even on the 135 still. I guess its a crap shoot with how B the B stock or refurbs are.

I'm with the rest...demand they send you a new manual and remote.

The HK 235 is an awesome reciever for what we paid for it. Its right alongside my Outlaw 1050. I prefer the Outlaw a bit, but the HK holds its own.

Enjoy the music while your waiting on hold for the new remote! I hope it works out.

Cheers

Mark
