Refurb H/K AVR235 received; am I too critical?

A few of you may remember this thread about my quest for a budget receiver. I received my, um, receiver, and have to say I am a little upset and want to see if I'm being hyper-critical. Perhaps, expecting too much.

First things first. I works flawlessly. In fact, it works really, really well. Solid performer, no doubt.

However, I wanted to run through the numerous problems I'm having, or that bug me.

1. The wrong remote was sent with it. The remote included was for the AVR140. Not a big deal? Well, on the 235, the remote has the Ez-Set Microphone to allow for calibration. Sure, the trusty rat shack will work, but that's not the point. If I didn't want that function, or didn't think it would be useful, I'd have just gotten the 135. And, this affects resale were I to ever want to sell it and move on. "Eh sorry, wrong remote, some functions not available."

2. The wrong manual was sent. Again, AVR140. Not a big deal. However, were I a novice and interested in hooking up an external amp, this manual would provide me with zero in way of info. Why? Because the 140 does not have pre-outs for channels. The 235/240 does, and thus, reflects this in the back panel illustration. Again, not a huge deal for me, but if I were to want to sell...

3. The unit itself smelled a little off. I can't place it, but it smelled kind of like smoke. Not a huge deal, but it was not pleasant to open it up and smell that. The scent has since dissipated, but it still wasn't a nice greeting.

4. Finally, and my biggest, is the condition of it. I know you have to expect cosmetic blemishes as a fact of life on refurbs, but mine seems a bit excessive. I'm probably going off the deep-end a bit here. Again, it functions flawlessly, but the look of it left a little to be desired. I suspect that my good luck with refurbs in the past is partly to blame. In the past few years, I've bought a number of refurb items: Denon dvd-1920, marantz dv4600, apple ipod, onkyo txsr602, among others. Not one, and I mean that, has had a clearly visible flaw. In fact, all but the 1920 had no flaws. And the 1920 only had one minor scuff on the back panel. That was it. On the 235 though, there are multiple scrapes, a white blemish (?) that I can't figure out what it's from, and the area around the tone controls is completely worn...the silver finish is worn through to reveal a more pewter-like color. It looks almost like a display unit somewhere. Again, let me stress, it does function flawlessly. But as I stated before, I don't know that if I was H/K that I'd want this going out the door to a consumer. But that's just me...I do concede that my feelings could be skewed by the good fortune I've had in the past with refurb units. After all, it is just cosmetic.

So what's the deal? Am I crying over spilled milk? :D Should I be happy that it works perfectly and move on? It does sound great. But I was just dismayed to find so many things that bummed me right out of the box.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. I have a 30 day return policy. Buuuuuuuut...the only problem there is I pay for shipping back AND I don't get a credit for the freight out. The s/h is $30 both ways. That means I'd be out $60 for a unit that cost me $225. I'd lose nearly 30% of what the unit cost. That doesn't seem very appealing. It's almost like I'm stuck. By that I mean, were this purchased locally, it probably would have been back at the store that day. But now I'm feeling like I might have to sacrifice a little.

Someone put me in my place...or, tell me that I should be upset. I've e-mailed H/K and await their response, but was curious what you guys think. Thanks. (Sorry I wrote a book.)

If it functions, fuggedaboudit. :) I know where you're coming from, but I would say let it go and just enjoy the sound man. On the manual and remote, I would demand replacements however... Just my .02.

Yeah, I hear ya. In fact, the post was kinda cathartic; after posting it, I thought to myself, you know, if it sounds great, who cares. And it really does do an admirable job. I'm really, really impressed.

I just hate that feeling of being stuck. Like I explained...were it not for the shipping charges I'd have to eat, this would be gone. But when you factor those in, not to mention the fact that I'd have to walk (no car, it's New York) upwards of 10 blocks in Brooklyn lugging around 30lbs of receiver/shipping box  , it makes you reconsider.

But yeah, it's a nice little unit. Just bummin' on the tangential stuff.

It's a shame Cory, especially since I think the HK appearance, while different, is very sleek.

I'm with J, get the correct remote and manual.

I'd at least do that....Remember, it is a refurb. If it was something that affected usability than that is different.

from the pics, they don't look super bad.

only the remote problem sucks.
the manual can be downloaded (I have the online manuals of all the models) not that it helps, the HK manual is pretty barbaric.

I have to say, the cosmetics would bug me a bit too. Hopefully the good price and quality sound would balance that out some. I am on the fence about sending it back. You have your 30 day window so I think I would sit with it for a week or ten days and then revisit the issue and decide then.

Thanks for all the replies.

Matt, yeah, I agree. I really, really like the look of H/K stuff. Some do, some don't. Guess it's an acquired taste. So, when it was looking a little roughed up, I was bummed.

If it was something that affected usability than that is different.
Agreed. I wanted to make sure I pointed that out, that the unit operates flawlessly, so that's good.

Mike, they're really not that bad. I have to admit that I'm probably being a stickler about it...which I think I opened myself up to in the original post. :D I'm an art director by profession, so I guess aesthetics play a big part for me.

Nick, believe me, I know what ya mean. I know it's only cosmetic...but man, it kinda bums me. I too am on the fence, as you could probably tell by the post. I'm definitely leaning towards keeping it, both for all the reasons others have brought up and for the simple fact that I'd have to eat $60. But I think you make a good point; maybe I should wait a few days and see what happens. Already, with 2 or 3 days under my belt with it, my displeasure has decreased. So maybe I'll wait and see. And ultimately, I need to hear back from H/K and see what they say.

Go for the proper manual and remote.

They owe that to you. As for the cosmetics, well, that's a risk you take unit.when buying "B" stock. They guarantee performance, not cosmetics. That's why they gave you $$ off of a new unit.

who did you buy from, anyway?

Yeah, I know, there is a disclaimer about cosmetics, and I guess it's part of the deal. Like I mentioned, I guess I had just been spoiled by the outstanding luck I've had with past refurb/b-stock purchases....all were virtually flawless, or like-new. I guess I've just gotten lucky in the past. :D

I bought it directly from Harman Kardon, through their Harman Audio store on eBay. I put a bid on it and won.

I picked up a Demo Marantz PM7000 - the remote was scratched and a little worn, a few scratches in the case, one very deep, etc... but I got it for a great price with full warranty and a box. The scratch really bugged me, but I had to keep telling myself "You got it for a lot less...don't complain". Plus, when it is in the rack in my bedroom, I couldn't see it. Then one channel died...good old 3 year factory warranty came in handy and now I have the brand new PM7200. So maybe this receiver will be a stepping stone to your next one, and since you got it for less than new, I'd look at it as a good thing all the way around :)

I don't think you're going overboard. I would have been on the phone with them within the hour, asking for a replacement. As soon as I smelled smoke, I would have lost it. HK has outstanding customer service. I bet they'll at minimum split the shipping cost, if not take care of it. Tell them exactly what you wrote here, and even mentioned it bugged you so much you posted here. That could affect future sales for them. They know that. Trust me, you still have rights as a consumer. Maybe instead of shipping out a new one, they'll offer you a $40 credit to keep that one. Doesn't seem like such a great deal to me in the condition it arrived, with the wrong remote and manual.

That is a bit strange, Cory. The HK Matt has was a refurb I picked up directly from the Harman Audio store, which should be the exact same as what's on their eBay store. Cosmetically, it was flawless from what I remember (correct me if this wasn't the case, Matt).

When I first got it, I thought I had a problem b/c the black plastic face looked dull and scratched. Turns out I hadn't removed the protective plastic covering on it...

I would, at the very least, voice your concerns with them about the remote, manual and the unit's odor. I'd also make mention that you're aware refurbs/b-stocks may have cosmetic blemishes, but these are a bit excessive in your opinion. I traded e-mails w/them regarding the plastic faceplate issue and they were nothing but professional and accomodating, so its quite possible that they would consider replacing/changing the cosmetically damaged parts.

All things considered, I'm glad to hear you're pleased w/it's performance and that is the most important aspect. I'd suggest talking w/their support to see if there's something they can do, but I think you'll lose out on the $30 return shipping, regardless if you do decide to return for a replacement that is in better cosmetic condition (which one is available on their site right now)... -TD

J, Buck, Tom, thanks for the replies.

I really don't want to be a squeaky wheel. The performance really is great. I seriously do not feel like I'm missing anything by letting go of the Marantz, which makes me very happy. Letting go of that thing was agonizing. I loved it more, espcially consdering the deal I got on it. But, we do what we must do I suppose.

I'm less irritated now. That's not to say it doesn't still bug me. Ultimately, I am concerned most with it's performance. But I gotta tell you...this is the very first H/K item I've ever bought. Yes, it's a refurb. Yes, you have to anticipate cosmetic imperfections...but I don't know. I guess it's a long way of saying, were it me, and I was refurbing this anyway, I might look into replacing the face of it. I don't know how much cost/labor that entails, but with the shape it's in, I'd have atleast considered it. I mean, it was already there, being refurbed, so why not? I'm sure it comes down to cost.

I'm waiting to hear back from H/K. The e-mail I sent them was very similar to my initial post; just very concise, bullet-pointed areas of concern. They said to allow 24-48 hours, and I sent it on Friday, so hopefully I'll hear back from them today.

Yeah, I had forgotten that you got it refurbed. When I opened the box you would have thought I had gotten a brand new receiver, not a second-hand refurbed.;)

Exactly, that's why I thought it a bit strange what Cory experienced. Then again, considering he got it for approx. $70 cheaper than what's listed on their site, Harman might have sent out one that's not in the greatest cosmetic shape... -TD

I just got a 3480 from the refurb shop and it was absolutely perfect. Looked as good as new so I am now preparing and lowering my expectations a bit for my next foray. I'm not sure what I would do if I got one with a couple of dings. HK might understand or have a way to deal their less than desirable refurbs. Of course you have no case against them but in this day and age they may be prepared to eat some of their more dinged up refurbs or least make sure their customers are happy.

Would love to hear what happens.

Will definitely let you know how it turns out Larry.

As for resetting your expectations, I don't know if that's necessary. I've had absolutely perfect luck with refurbs up until now. Also, I've heard of others getting refurbs where the cosmetic flaws were extremely minimal. Maybe I just got a bad apple. Or maybe my threshold for what's acceptable is a bit lower than H/K's. Whatever the case, and however it turns out, I'll definitely continue posting as things progress, even if it winds up that I just accept it and move on. Haven't heard back from H/K, but hopefully soon.

Well, it's now been 3 business days since I sent my e-mail inquiry. (4 if I counted Friday, when it was sent, but I won't). 3 business days and no response, even though their auto reply to me said: "...We respond to inquiries in the order received which is generally within one business day, all requests receive a reply within 2 business days."

This, coupled with my displeasure with unit is not leaving a very good taste in my mouth. C'mon, H/K.

I'll post what happens, if anything ever does.

That's BS, they definitely should have at least sent you a reply that they may be terribly busy at the moment and will contact you as soon as possible or something to this effect. No news is never good news when it comes to getting a response from customer support.

The number on their site for support is (516) 682-6438, give them a call if you don't hear from them shortly... -TD
