Reflection points calculated next steps.

I've calculated the 1st order reflection points to primary listening position. I used Google Sketchup to model and mark the reflection paths.

The reflection paths of the left and center to the left wall are about 20' roughly. The path from the right speaker to the left wall to the listening position was over 22' so I didn't bother charting it. But looking at the diagram I'm thinking I'll put panels on the right wall (Bryan's advice). This should make the right wall "feel" more distant than it is.

Here are my questions:

Do I put panels all the way down the right wall or just along the immediate listening area?

Bryan, since I'm going to be putting ultratouch above the drop ceiling, I'm assuming I don't need to put a panel above the listening position. Is that correct?

Also I see that GIK makes the Tri-Trap for the corners. As my walls aren't exactly 8 ft, can I cut them or do they have to be specially ordered?

I'd go ahead and plot the points from all 3 speakers to all seats on both of the walls. At a minimum, you'll want to hit the reflection points on the right wall.

The Tri Traps really can't be cut based on the way they're made. They're actually just a tad under 4'. How tall is the ceiling exactly?

Okay thanks, I'll get back to work and plot the points to all seats.

Regarding the ceiling height. In the rear, (where I could use tri-traps) the ceiling is 71". The basement slopes up there to meet the laundry areas and bathroom in the back.

Yup - so you'd only do one there and maybe a standard panel horizontally hung and straddling the wall/ceiling intersection.

I've gone ahead and mapped the first reflection points to the other two listening positions. I've re-done the google sketchup to show the other two seating positions.

I've attached the jpg of the latest diagram.

I guess next step is to calculate how many panels it'll take to hit all the reflection points against that right wall. I can probably use one tri-trap in each of the back corners. Unfortunately I can't mount a panel in the back to stradle the wall ceiling. The laundry room door accordions out into the room right at that position.

I found a local vendor for the ultratouch insulation, I'm still waiting for a call back to begin laying it above the ceiling tile.

When I order the panels what info should I put in the order so you get credit for the sale.

Looks to me just eye-balling that your best bet is simply 3 242 panels for along the right wall. Eventually, you'll want to do the left but that can happen later. Right now, we're just trying to balance things. Don't expect miracles with the omonipoles though. They're just 'special' in terms of placement requirements.

You should catch the majority of the points with those and still have it look nice. Reflections are kind of an area thing too rather than a pinpoint - this should be fine.

As for the ordering, we appreciate it. Nothing special is required. I hang on the forums to help people and spread the word in general about getting your room right as a cost effective method of getting better performance. Some people buy from us, some buy from others, some DIY. As long as more people begin to understand how important doing the room is, all is good. I did this long before I started working for GIK (hang on the forums and try to help).
