Okay, I just checked out this movie last night with DTS-MA.

First, the PQ is outstanding. I give it a perfect rating. There are some background scenes that has slight film grain, but I think John Woo did that on purpose just to please some hardcore videophiles - to make it look more "real" or something?:D

The SQ (audio) is unbelievably superb. Every single speaker is severely tested. When the horses run on the battle field, it sounds like a stampeed is going through my room.

I think my blood pressure increased by about 50 mmHg just from the soundtrack! It truly put me on the edge of my seat, and I was lying down!

This is one movie I will most likely watch three times - one in DTS-HD MA, one in TrueHD, and one in LPCM.:D

Oh, the story is pretty good, and the fight scenes are very cool.

Red Cliff Blu-ray is definitely a Reference Quality BD in my book.

Never even heard of it, but I think I must see it now :D I just read that it made more than Titanic in China. SWEEEEET. Big fan of Woo's stuff.

ADTG,

Thanks for the rec! however, a couple of questions:

This is region free, region A, or do you have a hacked player?

Can you see the watermark pop up every 15 minutes in the black bar?

Thanks.

I have the Denon DVD-3800BDCI. I believe you can play these discs on any BD players.

I noticed the "HD" symbol popping up on the upper left corner of the "letterbox", which is NOT inside the 2.35:1 frame. I don't remember how many times it popped up. I'm going to try the Masking on the Optoma Projector today. I think this is one example of where an Anamorphic Lens would come in handy.:D I mean if you had a 2.35:1 screen/frame, the watermark would not even show up!:D

So I will try the 2:35:1 Masking on my projector tonight and I'll let you know.

But other than the "HD" symbol, the Cinematography of the landscape and PQ is just so stunningly beautiful.

And I thought the SQ of Kill Bill BD was awesome! This Red Cliff BD blows away anything I've seen to date, including Kill Bill BD.

I checked out Incredible Hulk BD for 20 minutes yesterday as well. The SQ/PQ were great. But again, I don't think it compares to Red Cliff BD in terms of SQ.

I actually didn't think Kill Bill was among the top titles I've seen. Very good, but not cream of the crop.

I actually watched them out of order, KB II, then Kill Bill. Have you seen #2? I have the *impression* that the second one mighta looked a bit better, but Im talking out of my butt.

Well, the masking system worked flawlessly.:D

I don't see any watermark "HD" symbols at all now.

I guess we can include this as another advantage of Anamorphic lens and Masking systems. Anamorphic lens would be ideal, but I just can't spend another $2K on the lens right now.:D

I haven't watched the second one yet, only the first.

Well, of course you wouldn't.

I was just curious if you also have the watermark on your disc. It appears so. I've read it occurs every 15 minutes. This is a shame, IMO, though I may still get it eventually.

Yeah, it is a shame. I agree. That's why I'm so glad I have that masking thing on the projector.:D

In terms of overall story and excitement, I would never put ANY foreign movie (including Red Cliff) above the best American-made movies. That's just me.

But it's cool for a movie to have awesome PQ and at the same time offer exceptional sound via TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, & LPCM all in 7.1! Not that it matters to me since I'm a 5.1 guy anyway, but it's cool for those you are into 7.1.

It would be awesome if movies like Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, and Dark Knight could have Perfect PQ + Perfect SQ 7.1 DTS-MA + 7.1 TrueHD + 7.1 PCM.

Oh, by the way, this movie is only Part I or Volume I, kind of like Kill Bill.
