Something I've searched for but haven't found many concrete answers.
Rectangular room. Let's say 15x30 feet. Open concept floor plan, Left half is kitchen and dining area, right half is living room. So, you're confined to one side of the rectangle.
For best overall performance, would you....
A: Face the longer wall.
B: Face the shorter wall.
A is an asymmetric listening environment with one wall significantly closer to you than the other (Remember, your llistening area is only on one side of this rectangular space) The wall behind you would be much closer as well. B would be symmetrical and you would not have a wall directly behind you, but would be significantly narrower.
A friend of mine is in this exact room setup and is not sure how to orient their furniture and speakers for the best experience. My gut tells me the narrower listening environment would be better due to the symmetry, and rear surrounds could even be mounted on the back wall in the kitchen for a 7.2 setup.
But, is my gut right? Why or why not?
