Recommended Def tech setup

I have a pair of Def tech BP1.2x from a while back that we were using with our older setup. We are buying a new receiver (yamaha 663) and blu-ray player and want to replace everything but the def tech speakers we have.

We want to keep them on the smaller size because the wife does not what them standing out too much. The Mythos Two would probably be the largest we would want to go.

Can anyone recommend what would be a good pairing for the front and center?

I would try to keep all the driver sizes matched, at least for the front channels. So the Mythos 7 would be a good match for the Mythos 2. And the def tech's are voiced matched across all speaker lines, so the BP1.2x would sound the same as the mythos.

The Mythos Two Left & Right and the Mythos Three Center speaker all have the same size 4.5" midrange & 1" tweeter drivers. So I would get this combo. The BP1.2X would match them just fine as surround speakers. I would set the Mythos Two & Three to Small with crossover @ 80 Hz, and set the BP1.2X to Small with crossover @ 100 Hz.

Do you have any idea of the difference in sound between the two and fours? And if we used the Mythos four for L/R, would the Mythos three and BP 1.2x still be a good match? They have the same size drivers, but I want to be sure they don't overpower them.

Also, if we want to finish off the 7.1 setup, what would you recommend? Keep the 1.2x as rear surround, and pick something else up for the middle, or move the 1.2x into the middle and use something like the two's for the rear?

Thanks for the help

I think the Mythos Fours are slightly better than the Twos, but I don't think there is a significant difference in the overall sound quality between the Mythos Twos & Fours. Neither one of them will produce a lot of bass, so your bass output will definitely come from the subwoofer anyway. I would still set the crossover to 80 Hz.

If you get the Fours, the Threes and BP 1.2Xs will match just fine.

The surround channels (5.1 or 7.1) are not as important, and so you can very well get another pair of BP1.2Xs for your Surround Back speakers.

So Twos or Fours for Front Left + Right, Threes for Front Center, & 1.2Xs for Side and Back Surrounds would be just fine.

We picked up a pair of Mythos Four's and a Three for center. Listening to music has been great! We just need some help on how to configure the receiver.

I read your recommended settings for crossover, but the receiver (yamaha 663) is not that configurable.

The way the crossover setting works, according to the manual:

Use this feature to set the crossover frequency of all the speakers set to 'SMALL'. All frequencies below this will be sent to the subwoofer or front speakers depending on the setting of 'LFE/BASS Out' (which can be Both, Subwoofer, or Front).
Also, I am using a sub donated by a friend until I get around (read: convince wife) to buy a new one. Its a Onkyo skw-150, part of those all-in-one sets I believe. Not sure this would effect the settings.

Given this, how should I configure the following settings:

Size of fronts (Mythos Four) - Small or Large?
Size of center (Mythos Three) - Small or Large?
Size of surrounds (BP 1.2x) - Small
Crossover - Still 80hz?
LFE/Bass Out - Subwoofer or Both?

Thanks again for the advice and help

Yes, all speakers to SMALL and Crossover @ 100 Hz for all speakers if you cannot set independent crossover for each speaker. And set the LFE/Bass Out to Subwoofer only.

So set speakers to SMALL, Crossover to 100 Hz, and Subwoofer only.
