My suggestion would be HSU Research HB1-MK2 bookshelf speakers. They are just a bit higher than your budget at $169 each. I did alot of research recently on bookshelfs and decided on these. If you want to read up on them a bit, there are good reviews on hometheaterreview.com and steromojo.com. Anxiously awaiting a review of these on Audioholics(they reveiwed the older version of these quite a few years ago).

If your son will not be using a subwoofer, you might find these make a decent full range speaker for a bookshelf due to the 6.5" woofer.

No longer available.
Same with the great deal on the EPOS Epic 1. They were $200 for a few months and are now back up to $400.

The Cambridge S30 in the oak veneer seem like a good bet too. I've been pondering a pair of those also or getting my BS22s modded by Dennis.

The prototype modded BS22 is due to hit my door today.

I'm actually listening to them while I type this (I have them for a review) so there is some direct perspective on my part. They aren't going to throw out a lot of bass -- nothing this size could -- but if your son does indeed enjoy a musical speaker then I think you'll find he likes these. You certainly can't beat the price.
I may buy him a subwoofer when he moves into his own place. :-D

Hey...just saw this thread.

Hope your son (and you) enjoy the HVL-1's.

Let me know if you have any questions.
