Are you willing to look at used? For that kind of $ I would look at older versions of stuff in the $350 range.

If you look used, you could probably look at the PSB alpha line for not much more than that. There are an older pair of PSB alpha mini's on ebay starting at $65 and buy it now for $100. Also you could look at things like cheaper JBL's, infinities, and Polks if you just want something to make sound and have some range. Also, audio advisor is closing out a bunch of Athena stuff. I haven't heard them, but people say they are great for the price. The LS-100s are $99.

I'll second the Mission M70's. Nice little speaks. But yeah, in your price range, you'll get more speaker for the dollar buying used. Check Ebay, Craigslist, etc.

Another good bookshelf speaker is the Sony SS-B3000 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair) which you can buy and have shipped for less than $100 per pair.

In that price range I would look at the Polk R150's or even the Insignias that have been all the rage. Not sure of the model #'s but can be found at bb. I would think the Polks would be a lil more efficient than the Insignias. Hope this helps. Good luck in your decision.

I'd pass on the R150s. They can be had as low as $40-50 if you keep an eye on Fry's website, but there is a reason for that too...

Are the R150's a bit too bright John? I noticed they don't handle power very well in that they would distort quite quickly. But, given the budget thought it might be one to consider. I am sure the LS100's would be better. Have you ever heard the Insignias? I have and thought not bad given their price point. Sorry, but really don't remember the model #'s.

Yeah I did notice the Insignias were built quite well especially for the price. Bigger than I thought they would be too. All good points there Seth.

Yes, they are bright and the ones I had did break up when pushed. The midrange is decent, especially considering the price. They are fine as a surround speaker or a background music speaker, but not as a main IMO. I tried to buy some Insiginas, but they were sold out - no I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet.

i second the recommendation of the Athena's at Audio Advisor. They are on clearance now... Those will be hard to beat for $100.

Yeah the 150's are very bright and forward sounding to the point they are harsh. I was considering them for my rears BUT got a good deal on my RTi4's instead. Just got my FXiA4's yesterday.........oh yeah!!!!! Oh, I thought the Insignias had very good tight sounding bass. Not a bad speaker for the money if you ask me. However, as you recommended the Athenas are imho the op's best option given his price range.
