Recommend bookshelf setup for a large bedroom?

Hey guys,

I am planning to get a new sound system for my PC and after abit of research, have decided on a particular setup.

I currently have a Beresford TC-7520 USB DAC/preamp I bought awhile ago just sitting around doing nothing. I'm planning on matching this with hopefully a moderately priced 2nd hand Rotel RB-1050 (70Wx2) power amp.

As you can see my budget is fairly small. When it comes to bookshelf speakers theres just so many brands that everyone compliments I have really no idea where to start. I'm a noob, hence I am here to ask you pros - What can you recommend to match my setup for about 600USD or less?

I'd say maybe a pair of these. Larger for a bookshelf, but they are fairly neutral and clean sounding.

If you can deal with the size and plain-jane looks I would definitely second the Ascend 340SE recommendation. Very good for music and HT, and a nice amount of bass. They can certainly fill a large room and they do not require gobs of power to do so.

I respectfully disagree that the Cambridge S30 is a great speaker. I was quite disappointed with them when I had a chance to hear them given all the hype surrounding them.

My own preference for a large bedroom setup with Rotel power would be a set of Era D4. If you want to save a few bucks, I would suggest the Epos ELS-3.

The Ascends are good advice. I would also give these guys a close look, they are $650 shipped. They have very good extension for bookshelf speakers- 43 hertz! That is probably due to their size, and slightly larger than average woofer diameter of 6.75". They are 8 ohms speakers too, so you can use them with any amp or receiver. They are heavy suckers for bookshelf speakers, at 53 lbs a pair, so its good that shipping is free within the 48 states.

Much like those are the Aperion Intimus 6B, although they are just a bit over your budget at $690 shipped. They are also larger, heavier bookshelfs, they have good extension but these are quite insensitive, with a sensitivity of 82 db. I would want to have a fairly powerful amp if I were to ever use these. Now that I think about it, these might not be the best speakers for your situation unless you were going to use a more powerful amplifier.

These might be good for you, if your amp can handle the 4 ohm load. I seem to remember reading that they have a pretty steep roll off at 80 hertz though, so I wouldn't use them without a subwoofer (personally though, I wouldn't use any bookshelf speaker without a subwoofer, but that is due to my particular tastes).

They are very good speakers to put it mildly. I don't know of a single sub 600 pair that beats those. Some may match it, and maybe slightly outperform it. But I'm betting in a double blind test contest these would run with all of them in your budget.

Those are very good speakers too. Plus you get all the AH store bonuses for warranty and what not.

I recently purchased a pair of the Behringer B2031P's thanks to lsiberian's (and others') advice and am very satisfied. I am also using them in the bedroom for a predominantly music application with some broadcast and movie use also. They are versatile enough for all of these uses. They are punchy enough on the low end to get away with not having a sub (thanks to an 8 3/4" driver!), although a sub would still definitely improve the low end since the Behringers roll off at about 55Hz but are very flat from 55 to 20k.

The only thing I will mention is that the speakers are fairly large - approx 15"h x 10"w x 10"d and about 25lbs per speaker. They can be found from a variety of retailers online and otherwise in the $150-$180 per pair range, and I really don't know how you can do much better for anywhere near that price.

I have to agree with the 2 above me on the B2031p's. I would highly recommend them. I have them paired with a dayton sub-120, which really adds a whole new dimension that you really cant get with just bookshelves.
