BTW, I do know you, Peng, and several others friends are north of here. :) I have a special sensitivity due to my upbringing, I guess. I was in a shcool that went from majority-white to not while I was attending, in a racially charged urban area. I learned, and changed a lot during my senior year in high school. :) For the better. I don't consider it politically correct, rather just... aware. ;)
People have dogs of different races over time and don't bother about it , but won't accept a human being of a different race than theirs.

Ha... or nationality. :p
The silly thing is, we are all the same race!... its sub-race... or color... that determines it for far too many. Regardless....

(Though I'd be fine if we'd stop cross-breeding poodles and chihuahuas with every other dog breed! I have yet to, and hope I don't ever, see a doberdoodle, or an akihuahua! :eek:o_O:rolleyes:)

;):p:cool:

Did you know that kijiji is a subsidiary of eBay?
No, I did not, just know it's a favorite site for a variety of things....thought of it more like craigslist. I just looked at the wiki and apparently it was avail in the US but didn't catch on....got changed to ebay classifieds here back in 2010.

So what's the bottom line recommendation here guys? I need a good 5 channel amp.

What would be some of the best used ones to look at, with 250 WPC?

Well... I can reiterate my first suggestion of a refurb Monolith 3 from Monoprice. $905 isn't a bad price for a 3 x 200w amp and I believe that one has the same warranties, etc.

Or you could go with smaller separates. Either way 200 wpc is puh-lenty for your speakers.

I would do some combo of monolith amp, or monoblocks from outlaw. For outlaw, they have a link to a pricing breakout for buying multiples on the main product page. I suspect these are your best options right now for cost conscious power. ;)

That does sound ideal.
Would you say this would sound superior to the Monolith or Emotiva XPA5 amps? Just wondering.

I don't know, it would change by the day/week.
I know, that's why it's hard to say what might be available used.....plus matters if you're willing to risk buying untested or without local pickup. Have you checked sites like Audiogon or Hifishark? Why 250 wpc particularly?

I don't know about the newest version of the XPA-5 but I bet it would sound just as good/bad as the Monolith 200 WX5 amp.

Well, I don't know. I'm really still all over the place.

I do realize that I probably need to be looking at used amps, because I cannot afford a top shelf amp if it's new, unless I go with something like the Monolith.

I do want 250+ watts per channel, because that is what Polk recommends, and other experienced testers of these particular speakers.

So here are a few key questions.
  1. What brands should I look at for older amps?
  2. What brands to avoid? (known for reliability, low resale, sound quality problems, etc)
  3. Is there any particular reason to get a beastly 5 channel amp... or could I piece together some monoblocks, or 2 or 3 channel amps if I find a deal?

Polk "recommends" a "steady state" amp anywhere between 20-300 watts. I think you're overthinking this but good luck!

It's been 5 pages since your first post, I don't remember if you plan on using an AVR or prepro, and how far you sit from the surrounds? I am just wondering if you only need a 3 channel power amp.

I personally would not buy a used amp with no warranty or anything on it so I can't really help there. I don't really like buying any electronics used. Speakers, yes. Amps and receivers, no way.

Or less than 250 watts... that's the sticking point between buying new and used for op... 50 watts.
