Recommed a DVD Player

Well I am just starting this whole a/v thing and I was going to buy a 35 dollar
DVD player at sears but I realized I don't have a clue as to quality of a DVD player so I am hoping a wiser smarter audio/visual person could give me the benefit of recommending what to look for in a good DVD player....single disk is all I want....Sony,JVC,..etc. etc. formats etc etc features..etc etc

What type of display are you hooking it up to? HDMI/DVI a possibility? Any upconversion? What is the reality of your budget?
