K, well i'm currently looking for a receiver for my HT now, i'm a little confused as what I should get, but i'll try to be as descriptive as possible

pretty much, i'm looking for a Receiver i can plug all my **** into PLUS control the audio, ie, run my Blu ray player, Wii, Digital Cable box, As my projector is going to be at LEAST 15 feet away, i dont want to have to buy multiple HDMI + component cables, i want to run just 1 to the projector

with that said, i'm most likely going to be running a 5.1 setup, i'm still looking for speakers + a sub but I'd like to start off with a receiver and get that in the bag before I move on

ALSO, if i could buy it locally i would prefer that, i'm most likely ordering speakers online, but i dont really feel comfortable buying a receiver online, just for returns etc, so if anything in this price range at Futureshop, BB, costco etc is a good choice, i will take a look at that

also, I'm asuming i'm going to need at LEAST 2 HDMI in on the receiver..

but with these HDMI connections either a component upconverting receiver or an HDMI upconverting receiver is needed i've been told?

so please, if you guys could recomend me a receiver to fit this criteria i would very much appreciate it

You could start your search with the Onkyo TX-SR605, which is well under budget, then look at the 705/805 if it doesn't meet your needs. It's a place to start anyway.

New receiver

You have a large room so I would recommend a good mid-fi receiver that has pre-amp outputs (unlike Onkyo 605) in case you want to upgrade in the future. The Onkyo 805 retails for $1k, but street prices are close to your $800 range.

Alternately, something like the Yamaha RX-V661 ($400) would be a good start for your application and allow you to add an amp when budget allows.

I will second the V661. It will do what you need, and do it well. It's cheap, so in six months or so after you have had more time to learn the ins/outs of this hobby, you can still sell it for about what you paid, and upgrade (if you feel the need, which you may not).

I would avoid Onkyo for the time being. The 661 works very well.

Will i be held back in any areas regarding speaker power or anything though with this V661?? i'm scared I will buy a receiver and it will not upconvert well enough, or even skew a picture from whatever i'm running

Hello Sniperslayer,

I noticed your other thread. Nice LARGE dedicated room!

Because I imagine that you will be quite further from the speakers than typical, in a large room, I think you should go for the most powerful you can get. Distance from speakers is a real concern. If you are willing to upgrade in the future, I might even add outboard amp(s). (Meaning save money on an entry-level receiver for now, if you can be sure to add the amps later). To be honest, Im not sure that bookshelves can cut it in that room. Just one of many opinions, there's always budget, I know.

Sometimes I am guilty of believing everything I read. So, regarding the Onkyo's, just fyi here, I believe they are not 4 ohm rated until you hit the 705. The 805 is rated at 60 amps vs 36 amps for the 705. The much more expensive 905 has a torroidal transformer, the only Onkyo receiver to have one. This is something that is more typical of high-current, hi-fi separates. More current + less distortion.

Best of luck.

This post says it all. The Onkyo TX-SR805 is worth even stretching the budget for if it can't be had for $800. It is advertised all the time at the top of this site for $900, and it is a killer deal at that price. It has plenty of power to spare, and with THX Ultra 2 certification you had better believe it does. It also has HDMI 1.3 which allows true deep color to be passed on to any display that features HDMI 1.3a. Aside from the HDMI features it has much to offer. It has the most advanced Audessey auto setup at this time and has plenty of connection flexibility.

The Yamaha RX-V661 is a great receiver as well, but these two receivers are no where near the same league. The Onkyo has twice the mass and twice the features.

Good luck.:)
