i'm new at this and have a question about hooking up speaker to my reciever. i have ordered a yamaha rx-v659 and have a question about the back and the hook ups. i noticed on the back there looks like there are 2 places i can hook up my speakers. on the right under a "speaker" heading are a set of what looks to be banana plug recipients. and on the left under an "audio" heading are a set of one white one red recipient for the different speakers as well. now my question is do they do the same job, and it doesn't matter where i hook the speakers up? Or do each set have a certain job that i am un-aware of?

thanks
Matthew.

Your speaker inputs are the red and black knurled knobs on the bottom right of the receiver, and they appear to be 5 way binding posts (I prefer locking banana plugs at the reciever/prepro and spades at the speaker-your mileage may vary). The red and white RCA female inputs on the left side are analog source inputs, and are probably separated into audio and video inputs. You'll probably see Toslink (funky looking 'lil black square inputs) and digital coax (orange RCA female inputs) located somewhere on the left side, as well as a digital out port to a CD/DVD-R deck.

Banana plugs are great (I use them), but not really necessary. The red and black knobs on the right, will unscrew. Unscrew them until you see a hole going through the post, the knob is on. You can put your wire through the hole, and then tighten the knob back down on it. But, if you can afford banana plugs, they are the way to go..............
Good luck!
