reciever converting video signal

Looks like you can perform HDMI passthrough by changing the HDMI Monitor Setting to "No". This will disable On screen display and allow HDMI to pass unmolested. Page 25 of the Onkyo 605 User manual.

Yes, I am bored.
HA HA - i was just going to send this but you beat me to it. I'll post it anyways

"HDMI Monitor Setting Set to Yes
With the HDMI Monitor setting set to Yes (see
page 47), video input signals flow through the
AV receiver/AV amplifier as shown, with composite
video, S-Video, and component video
sources all being upconverted for the HDMI output.
Use this setting if you connect the AV
receiver/AV amplifier’s HDMI OUT to your TV.
The composite video, S-Video, and component
video outputs pass through their respective input
signals as they are."

COMPONENT VIDEO OUT to your TV.
Composite video is upconverted to S-Video and
S-Video is downconverted to composite video.
Note that these conversions only apply to the
MONITOR OUT V and S outputs, not the
VCR/DVR OUT V and S outputs.
The composite video, S-Video, component
video, and HDMI outputs pass through their

The whole thing is, when i set it to No last night, i beilieve i lost my sginal and could not see an image although i could hear the movie playing. Any way around that?

Maybe you just had an HDCP handshake issue. I'd try to set it again then power cycle everything.

alrighty - i will try the settings first, then power cycle tonight

I am now thinking something else. Does it make sense to have hdmi and component cables coming out of one blu ray player and then into the receiver. Is there anyway to couple the audio with the HMDI, and the video use the component. Does it make any sense at all to even do this?

You might be able to do this, but I don't know why you would. Hi-def audio and 1080i video? I guess it depends on your brp.

I actually also have a Tosh HD A2 that is 1080i which played my sd dvd's pretty well. That is the player I would most likely play sd dvd's on.

Interesting. Thank you for the info. The Blu- ray player is a Panasonic DMP-BD30K

On a semi related note. i could still use my old componenet cables for the video to the projector but would i still get a good 1080p image - or do i need the hdmi to get that quality picture

i ask because this may fix the whole issue
So, we are back to a few basic issues.

1. The Panasonic 30 does not have good upconversion of DVD video. This is a known issue with the BD30 and when Panny released the BD35/55 players, this issue was significantly improved. If you want the best image possible, you will need the 'upconversion' of the DVD to take place outside of the Panasonic.

2. The Onkyo may do a decent job, but if you are already sending out HD video from the BD30, then the Onkyo likely isn't touching the signal, and while the onscreen menus could affect things, from your follow up posts, that doesn't sound like it.

3. Not sure about alternate configurations, but it sounds like you have some playing around to do with the Panny. I would try to keep the HDMI in the path, but would maybe try to output DVD at a lower resolution if possible. It may not be possible to choose two different resolution outputs, one for BD the other for DVD.

You aren't doing things wrong for sure, but you definitely aren't getting the most out of things right now. If your receiver supports it, you may want to add a DVD player along with the Blu-ray player. Kind of a pain, but you may get better results overall by doing things this way.

I was thinking about this. Would I just hook up a regular dvd player with composite cables into the receiver and then out through HDMI to the projector? Somehow i though the quality would significantly diminsh by doing this. I will definitely try it though.

just as a side note the two standard dvd's I was testing all of this on was Bad Boys 2 and Return of the King. They both look worse than they did on my last setup. Hope they just release then on blu ray soon. Both would look amazing.

Okay I'm back, And i have not made any progress. Here is what I have done.

Hooked up sd dvd player to receiver (onkyo tx-sr605) and then to projector (Mits HC5500) via hmdi and I still get lesser video quality than I used to

Even hooked up a hd cable box (1080i) straight to projector with hdmi and it looks worse than when I had my Infocus X2 (800X 600) hooked up to a hd cable box (1080i) via component cable

I am having a hard time thinking that a 2000 dollar proj cant even match the video quality of a svga 4 year old projector when it comes to sd dvd and cable video signal. The only differences that have been made are the projector itself and I am now routing everything through my receiver.

Now, one more thing. The manual of my onkyo tx-sr605 says to set HDMI monitor to "NO" so it would not change the video signal, however when I do that I lose the entire image. It seems to me that shouldnt happen. I only get a picture when it's set to Yes, but i think it is somehow changing it.

You guys have been very helpful, I was just curious if anyone had anymore ideas.
