Hi, I was interested in getting the SONY STR-DA7100ES rated a 170 x 7 and all polk audio speakers -LSi9 front bookshelf- LsiC center Li -Lsi9 or Lsifx for the surround? The Polk Audio speakers are rated at 200watt max. For the sub im going with the Velodyne SPL-1200r. Most likely I will set it up as a 5.1 system. My room size is 18x17 with high 25ft+ ceiling. Im thinking about this setup but wanted to run with the forums before I hit the buy button? What do you guys think about this setup? Will I be underpowered? Do you think I should change any part of the setup? Any and all sugguestions would help. Dont want to spend money and regret later. Thanks in advance..........

I'm not a big fan of Sony receivers but if the price is right on an ES model.........why not.

Power should be adequate for the speakers & the room. You may want to do some comparisons on receivers. Check the way Sony rates the power. On the ES I think they're better at rating it but still overstate it...............as do other receiver manufs.

It is not necessary to match up the power rating of the receiver to the speakers. In your room, anything over 100 Watts / channel should be adequate to drive the Polks or any other moderately efficient speaker. Also keep in mind that doubling the power (100 Watts to 200 Watts) will only cause a 3 dB increase in volume making it "slightly louder".

For mid-fi receivers, you should check out the Yamaha RX-V2600 and Denon 3806. Both of these manufacturers have better reputations then the Sony receivers. If you really want 200 Watts / channel, then you sould consider an outboard amplifier with a receiver or pre-pro.

The LSI's are one of the better polk lines. In your budget, you should also consider auditioning Paradigm, Axiom Audio, PSB, Klipsch Reference, and other manufacturers.

zipper - yeah for a 170x 7 watt receiver the sony is the best priced I've seen. Anything that has states 200x7 is double or triple the price. The quailty of the sony receiver I dont know..........

jcpanny - Looks like I wont be underpowered. For a 200x5 or 7 what outboard ampilifer/ receiver would you recommend? speaker?

In my price range. What other setup do you guys think would sound about the same? or better???

I have auditioned a set of the Polk LSI series and I am not a big fan. To me they had to much of a "boxy" or muffled sound. I would try out other speaker models and see how they compare to the Polks. Take a CD or movie that you are familiar with when you demo so you can make accurate comparisons.
