OK so i've been upgrading my setup from top to bottom and putting all my components in a closet which is luckily right on the other side of the wall where the plasma will be hung.

So i've got the Pioneer 60" Kuro (non elite), Tivo HD, a monster HTS-3600MKII power conditioner, a VERY old pioneer elite CD jukebox that just works so well there has never been a need to replace it, Xbox 360, wii, and ps3. In wall 3 Polk Audio LC65fx speakers and Velodyne sub, JBL rears, and 2 buttkicker LFEs

The thing is i still have my pioneer VSX-1017 receiver, i'm debating upgrading it but i'm not sure, if i dont, ill need an HDMI switcher, and ill have the Wii in component and everything else in HDMI.

So in keeping with the quality of the rest of my setup should i spring for the receiver upgrade? also i'm using a hamony 1000 remote with RF unit for control of all my components.

thanks a bunch.

If the receiver can transcode analog video signals (like component video) to HDMI and act as a true repeater then there is no need to upgrade unless you want new feaures that are not offered by the current recevier. Given that you say that you would need an HDMI switch, I'm guessing the current Pioneer does not have the capability required.

If you want the convenience of a single cable (HDMI) to the receiver and have the receiver do all the switching then Yes it would be advantageous to upgrade the receiver. With the universal remote you have it should be easy to create macros to do the switching for you but it is simpler to have the recevier handle all the switching. Audio follows Video, so on a reciever with the requisite switching capabilities, every time you switch to a new video input, the audio follows and you don't have to mess with changing the input on the TV.

Why are you using the Polks for the fronts? That model is designed to be used for the surrounds. They are also a 4 ohm speaker which may put an excessive load on the 1017 receiver.

I hate to say it but, you’re trying to put a good system together and trying to spend the least money where it matters most, the speakers. As far as the receiver question goes, I’ll just second MDS’s response. The CVs may work for now, but you’ll definitely want to upgrade down the road. Are you looking for speakers to compliment the plasma?

ya, i'm looking for on the wall type speakers, and i know unfortuneately i fell inlove with the screen and it ate up the majority of my budget.

I'd say i'm 60% TV 25% games 15% music mix.

Its a smaller room maybe 12 feet deep and 16 feet long.

I guess right now i'm stuck with the receiver i have and the speakers are my greatest concern. At this point i'm slammed when it comes to price. i have about 500 to spend on the 5.1 speaker package... i was using a samsung HLS-6187 DLP tv before with samsung HT-DS1000 speaker system before

as my knowledge has grown and my question has evolved, basically is the Cerwin Vega set the best 5.1 speaker package for $500 or less?

For $500 or less I'd just buy a decent pair of stereo speakers and add to the set as money gets less tight. You'll end up with much better sound in the long run this way.

ok well then i guess i've decided what i'm going to do.

I'm going to keep the Cerwin Vega's for the time being, as money gets less tight ill upgrade the speakers first, and the 500 CVs will make good speakers for the smaller set up in my room and not too costly for a second theater unit.

I think they should produce better sound than i've been used to (samsung HTS-DT1000) and will give me the chance to upgrade my speakers in in buy in the future, which is how i'd prefer to do it.

no one has pointed out a better 5.1 speaker system for sub $500... so it will have to do short term... (better than my first choice of JBL HTI series in wall speakes HTI55 and HTI8 fronts and JBL venue rears with a Boston Acoustics XB2 8" sub... for some reason i was going to do that, when i could do the CVs for about 50 bucks less.

Need help in purchasing a receiver for my Bose Accoustamass 6.1 speakers. Any suggestions? Want to get a good receiver within budget for my home theater room. I converted a 2-car garage.
