Just wanted to get some input. I might be upgrading my receiver soon, if I can sell the one I have first.

I've been able to find the Denon AVR-890 on special for 679$ CAD on boxing day.
However it looks as though the Pioneer VSX-23TXH , Onkyo TX-NR807 and Marantz SR5004 could be better options? however, not many stores here where I live carry these and if they do, they are really expensive.

So I would like to know if the Denon's are comparable in sound quality to these other receivers. The Denon's retail at 999$ CAD, so its basically $320 off. thanks for the help.

Edit: Also one more question, how similar is the Pioneer VSX-9040TXH compared to the VSX-23TXH?

Most audioholics believe that modern electronics will basically sound the same, with specs that are beyond the range of human hearing. Buy the receiver in the price range that you have set, with the feature set you need. Many are brand loyal and that will help them decide. By googling the particular model you are looking for, you can often find problems with it that may sway you elsewhere. Google is your friend. Some, like me, like to buy used gear. It allows me access to things I otherwise can't afford new.

there's is also another route, ebay. just dont know if I should trust buying a receiver off ebay (shipping handling purposes).

has anyone here bought off ebay and had a good experience?

also, are all brands rating the W per channel the same, is there a standard that they use?
