receiver problems - please help

hey guys,

i've been having problems with a harman kardon 235 i picked up last night. the set up went easily enough (i'm very new to all of this). i've got it hooked up to a toshiba dvd player for movies and cds, as well as my 27 inch tv for audio. i've been able to watch movies and tv without any problems, but i've had some serious issues with playing cds.

here's the problem: sometimes when playing cds, i get a 'protect' message from the receiver and it promptly turns itself off, sometimes i cannot turn it on again while it's set to dvd without getting the protect message and it turning itself off again.

does anyone have any idea why this would be? is the receiver defective, and should i return it?

Protect mode can mean that the wiring is incorrect, or that something is wrong with the unit.

Check your speaker wires for shorts at the receiver. Disconnect and reconnect all of them to make sure there are no stray wires contacting the chassis or another wire. Also, make sure your wiring is consistent for all speakers (+ to + and - to -).

What speakers are you running? If the impedance drops too low, you may also get a protect message.

What gets me is his reporting of 'sometimes' with Cd only playback.

I actually had something like this happen to me during an install when I hooked up a center with both leads going to the postive terminals on a bi-wireable speaker (couldn't see behind too well, had to pull the speaker out to find that out. It would play fine in stereo, and low on any modes that used the center, but as soon as you turned it up, the receiver would shut off (Onkyo 601).

Do you have your DVD player hooked up via digital or analog or both?

Yes, those conditions would make perfect sense

Is there anything sitting on top of receiver?

It may be overheating. Do you have the CD player sitting on top of the receiver? The heat from the two units may be the cause (if that is how you have it set up). How much open space is there?
