Receiver Overkill or Future Proofing?

I have three different family members with a Denon 2112 and all are happy with it. I think its a pretty solid unit with a decent amp section and, best of all, you get MultEQ XT, which will Eq a Sub. Whatever receiver you get, make sure it will Eq the sub, because, IMO, this will have the greatest impact on sound quality. The 2112 also has a pretty nice GUI, even if you don't need networking. Otherwise, look at the 1712 (its a little cheaper, no networking, worse GUI). Call (you have to call) Electronics Expo or J&R and ask for best price, they are both authorized dealers and you can get that unit new in the box for substantially < your $500 budget shipped and probably tax free, depending on where you live.

Edit: I just saw you might want preouts. The 2112 does not have preouts. I am not sure you need them, but if you want them and still want a Denon, you need to get into at least the 3312.

Pre outs are only a wish list item - not a must have. For the speakers I have at the current time, the on board power of any of the units talked about will be sufficient. I had the Denon 2112 on my list for a while, but wanted to see what other brands I should consider. (I have a Denon Avr 2400 still in use in a bedroom - so reliability is important to me). As you can see - I have never bought the current receivers and always shopped last year's bargain:)

The OP's current receiver, a Denon 1804, originally retailed for approx. $500.

Not only that, but he actually stated more than once that he is looking at receivers in the $500-$600 range.

I was just trying to make a point and potentially save the guy a few bucks.
Sorry, I got this thread mixed up with the Marantz/Rotel thread....

The XX12's almost are "last year's model," and there are some pretty good deals on the 2112 right now. If you wait a few months it actually will be last years model, but I'm not sure how substantial the savings will be.

Thank you to everyone who chimed in and gave really, great advice! I have narrowed the field to the Denon 2112 if I go with a network capable receiver or Yamaha 667 (last year's model) with pre outs.

I really appreciate your insight on a question that is asked so often. Thanks again!
