last week i got new speakers
front = wharfedale 9.6
center = wharfedale 9.cm

they are beautiful

and iam running an old receiver
sony str-de985

now on testing my new speakers
it sounded very off "my friend has wharfedale speakers as well"
he has the panasonic sa-he200

so we tested my and his on and off for about 2 hours,
and came to the conclusion that my sony receiver isnt worth two beans
the sound is harsh and the mids are not there and the bass isnt detailed
close to his receiver.

ok so ill get right to it,
i dont really know what to do i would like to spend up to 1k-1.5
on a stand alone preamp or maybe just a receiver, but just going by numbers
doesnt really work for me at all...

umm, i do need pre out's
due to the fact that tomorrow iam going to a mans house to buy
4 CARVER amps...

2 -TFM-35
2- TFM-15cb

all 4 for 600$ cash

i think iam getting a pretty good deal.

i know a decent amount about audio, enough to get by maybe.
i guess iam just asking for opinions on what i should by
that will give me the cleanest sound with out spending 5 grand.

i was looking up the Sunfire Theater Grand III
and i am getting very mixed reviews....

one was on ebay for 1100$ i placed a bid for 1250
and it ended up going for 1400$

i wasn't really sure if it was even worth it for that price.

really i dont want to be a cheap skate
but what is out there that i can get that will give me
a great sound stage, 7.1 also maybe even dts ture-hd...

thank you.
hope this inst confusing

Hello Metal!

You are making a great deal of sense & you are on the right track. I just upgraded from a Denon 3802 to the Sunfire TGP III & I LOVE IT. I will never go back to a receiver. I had already purchased over a year ago a Sunfire 5 channel amp & wanted to complete my setup by going back to all separates.

The TGP III has all the imputs that I consider important to have since I'm not interested in newer features that are coming out in receivers. Especially the video side of things.

The improvement that I got on the audio side of things has more than made the upgrade worth it.

So if you can get a Sunfire TGP III or IV go for it! Keep your eye on Audiogon as well as Ebay. I got mine from Audiogon.

Doesn't the STR-DE985 have pre-outs?
If so you may want to try it out as a pre/pro.

what do you think about just using a computer sound card.?
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude

iv read that it would compare to a 2,000$ pre/amp
is that true
could it have enough voltage to power the carver amps?

If I had 1.5k to spend on a pre-pro to run a couple of Carver amps, that is exactally what I would do. I didn't list the budget, the OP did.

I understand that he stated his budget was up to $1.5K. Other then the fact that he stated he wants dts ture-hd, I can see no reason to spend that much for those speakers on his electronics. JMO

Wouldn't something like this work?

That was pretty funny.:D

Look at that hair cut. HA HA, OHHH!

But that pre-amp would be mine if I had 1.5k in my pocket, and a couple of Carver amps.
I'm not saying it's not a nice pre-amp. And since the OP never mentioned anything about needing it's video processing. Just saying he could save $700 bucks or so. :D

Sure. Plus, there is extra power to use for many applications. Think of the possibilities. But that pre-amp would be mine if I had 1.5k in my pocket, and a couple of Carver amps.

When it comes to receivers, I just prefer Yamaha.
Hes got 4 amps Zumbo
2 TFM-35 , 250 rms x 2 , 400 @ 4 ohm , 750 into 2 ohm (Bridged 800 watts)
2 TFM-15 , 100 rms x 2 (Bridged @ 280 watts)
Why would he need anymore power ? :D
when it comes to pre/pro , i dont know . Look on Audiogone . Hopefully a pre/pro that leans towards Music . The Sunfire TGP 2 and up have Sonic hologram , which in 2 channel applications is a bonus .

Oh my! It would be an insult to those amps to use a receiver.:D
