Howdy!

I am finishing my basement which will include a new home theater. My equipment is as follows:

FR & FL: Martin Logan Ethos
Center: Martin Logan Stage X
SR & SL: Martin Logan Vanquish
RR & RL: Martin Logan Vanquish
Subwoofer: Martin Logan Descent i
and a variety of extras (e.g. blu ray player)

Should I get a high end receiver or just settle into an amp/preamp combo? My floating price range is between $5,000 and $6500.

Your opinions would be much appreciated.

With much appreciation,

Matthew

I don't think you'll find many receivers in the $5K range these days. In your price range and with those speakers, Pre/Pro and amp would be my choice.

How big is the room and how loud do you intend to listen? REALLY loud or just average listening?

That budget should allow some real good choices. How about Marantz AV8801 prepro, a Parasound Halo A51 for the L,R,C,SR,SL and a A23 for the SBL,SBR or a Denon AVR-4520 (4 ohm rated) plus a A31 and let the AVR drives the surround speakers? If you wish to save some money then you can consider products from Emotiva or Outlaw.

Those Martin Logan can drive to very low impedance but only does so at the higher frequencies that shouldn't be a problem for the 4520.
