What program material are you sending the receiver when you don't have the sub working? DD/DTS 5.1 movies? You did set the receiver's setup menu for speakers to sub yes/on; this is not a switch but a programming in the receiver. Some subs needs two rca inputs, a Y connection will do as well. What happens when you activate the internal test tones to level match the speakers? The sub should get something.
