Receiver HDMI Input to S-Video Output

We are setting up our conference with a new plasma TV to go with our projector. We have purchased an Onkyo 505 and connected a DVD player via HDMI to the receiver and then HDMI from the receiver to the TV. This works great to view DVDs on the plasma TV. We also have an S-video cable running from the monitor out on the receiver to the projector’s s-video in with the belief we could also view DVDs on the projector through the receiver connection. Needless to say, we couldn’t get the picture to play on both screens at the same time (i.e. HDMI out to TV and S-Video out to projector). Looking further in the receiver manual, it talked about needing the source type out of the receiver to match the source type in. So, we tried connecting an s-video cable between the DVD player and the receiver which resulted in HDMI and s-video out from the DVD to HDMI and s-video into the receiver. By doing this we were able to get pictures on both the TV and the projector.

Does the issue we came across relate to the HDMI pass-through versus HDMI switching in the receiver? The receiver has HDMI pass-through and we are wondering if HDMI switching will eliminate the need for the duplicate connections. We ideally want only the HDMI connection from the DVD to the receiver and then have s-video (to projector) AND HDMI (to TV) video out capabilities from the receiver. We also have a VCR and PC that we would like to connect to the receiver via s-video/composite and would like to be able to view these sources on the TV that is connected via HDMI. Make sense?

I didn’t see anything addressing this specifically, so I apologize if I am reinventing the wheel.

Thanks for the help!!!

That is a limitation of all receivers. None of them will convert a digital video input like HDMI down to an analog video format for output, although many newer receivers will do the opposite.

It's the same with audio. If you connect a dvd player using an optical connection the sound will only be output by the optical out (if it has one) but will not be converted to analog for output over the tape outs or other audio outputs.
