Pioneer seemed to have the best bang/buck when I was looking not too long ago. If you can afford an Onkyo, Denon, or HK go for that though.

Check out this site. Denon and Yamaha have some good deals. I got my Denon 3805 for $840 out the door. It's a killer unit, but way more than you need right now. I don't know how the Denon 1705 compares to the Yamaha 450, but they'll do what you need them to. If you have a subwoofer, it will be self powered. The receiver will cut out all frequencies to your main and surround channels over a certain frequency you choose, say 80Hz. That leaves all the receivers power to your 5 or 7 channel setup over that frequency.

Another good site for Denon equipment is www.dakmart.com Compare those prices to Ubid.com

Pioneer VSX-D912

I own a Pioneer VSX-D411, so I know a little about the quality. It's lasted me for over 2 years with no problems whatsoever. Above average sound quality with music, ROCKS with movies, especially DTS. The 912 has plenty of features for me, probably my next upgrade. Same as the current 914 specs-wise. You can find it for a little over $200.
