Receiver choices to power old Fisher speakers

Ok, so I'm just another noob asking for advice but I hope that a few people will have some opinions on this. I am a college student right now so I am on a fairly tight budget at the moment, and it seems that I will be for the next few years. I have been using a 20+ year old Fisher stereo receiver with some Fisher floor speakers for a while now, but my receiver died on me. Through fixing speakers and acquiring more second-hand, I now have two 100-watt (8 ohms) Fisher floor speakers, two 60-watt Fisher speakers that are similar to the first, and a pair of unbranded 100-watt speakers that I've fixed up myself (but they sound great). These speakers work well together, but I must admit that it is an unreasonable love of my speakers as much as lack of funds for replacing all of these.

So yeah, pile of floor speakers.

Like I said, my receiver died recently, leaving me with no music or cool movie sound. Since I'll be graduating soon and moving somewhere that I can fully exploit a sound system, I figured I would buy an entry level surround sound receiver to power everything. That leaves me with the need for a receiver for under $200, although I could probably squeeze my bank account for an extra $50 if I absolutely have to. The system would have to work with dvd surround sound and music output from a high quality computer sound card, as well as an old turntable. While I wouldn't know good movie sound from crap, I am a bit anal retentive about my music so that's more or less what I'm going for. Oh, and I've got a couple of nice graphic eq's for that music to tweak the hell out of anything I listen to. Anyone have a direction to point me?

I've seen good reviews of that unit, and the only real reason that I didn't buy one of those already is that it is only rated at 75 watts per channel. Should I be worried about underpowering four of my speakers like that? I have read many people warn about not doing that for fear of distortion at high volumes shredding speakers.

The warning is valid, but for $200-250, you arent' going to find any receivers with a ton of power.

I've installed a few systems with Onkyo receivers for customers recently (601, 502, 8011) and in each case, the power was very respectable. Unless you have a big room, I think the 502 will be OK with those speakers.

Next choice might be the Harman Kardon AVR-135 refurb factory direct from www.harmanaudio.com for $250.

I guess I have more or less ruled out all other receivers except the Onkyo TX-SR503 and the JVC RX-7030. It just happens that overstock.com has some refurbs on that JVC model and it sounds good as well. I can't find any reviews though. Any experiences with it? If I can rule the JVC model out I'll be buying the Onkyo unit.

Thanks for all of the help so far!

I have never heard that particular JVC model but I had an older (circa '99) 5.1 JVC model (the exact model number escapes me at the moment) that performed extremely well until I replaced it this year with a Yamaha RX-V 1500. And as much I LOVE the Yammie, I gotta say the gap in quality is not as big as you would expect. JVC in my experience makes very good products for the money...

Of course having said all that I would suggest you also take a look at the Yamaha's in your price range... the HTR-5840 comes to mind with solid power and can be found somewhere like etronics.com for about $250 when it's all said and done....

In case there happens to be anyone in my tight budget range looking for a good receiver, I've got the following two links:

The JVC RX-7030VBK
http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?page=proframe&prod_id=625972

and

The Onkyo TX-SR502
http://www.ubid.com/actn/opn/getpage.asp?AuctionId=10505170

Any of the more experienced members out there have an aye or nay for that JVC model? It seems like it might be a couple of years old, but I am more interested in sound quality than the latest decoding modes.

Thanks for the help so far!
