Receiver advice for a cheapskate audio snob?

Well guys, I ended up pulling the trigger on the Marantz SR6003- yup, last year's model. I ordered it at A4Less- was quite a bit less expensive than the SR6004, and I don't need the latest model for what I'm doing- just a nice HDMI upgrade from a company that still respects audio. I'm sure I'll be happy with it. Even without the HDMI connection I'm sure it's a better receiver than the Pionner Elite I have anyway.
You did give up Audyssey Dynamic Volume and EQ.

If you intend to use the Audyssey MultEQ with the 6003, be informed that you cannot apply this tech to the advanced codecs (TrueHD or DTSMA) when bitstreamed. IOW, if you want to use this tech, these codecs must first be decoded at the player.

If you ever go with 7.1 (rears), the same sort of thing applies. The 6003 will not be able to matrix the advanced codec bitstreams; they must be decoded at the player if that is your wish.

I would hold on to that Hafler amp.

That amp is probably better than whats in most receivers today. I would use it to drive your front channels or at least give it a try.

Perfectly fine with me. I'm intending to have the PS3 send out Linear PCM rather than bitstream......I'm not that crazy about EQ systems in receivers anyways, unless we're talking about a $10,000 receiver that would have EQ circuitry on the level I'm used to dealing with. Thanks for the tip though, appreciate it.

Have you checked out the Audyssey system ? It's not a gimmicky eq system.

Read it. Nice- they actually addressed what I was talking about, in:

"Parametric and graphic equalizers can only correct for the frequency response and do so in a very coarse manner because they have limited resolution (bands)."

and then counter it with:

"MultEQ filters start in the time domain. They are not just a few parametric bands. Instead they use several hundred points to represent the room response in both the frequency and time domains. "

YES. Looks like technology has moved forward quite a bit since my last receiver purchase.

The Yamaha RX-V1065 does not count, it's still got that "I'm sold at Best Buy" feel. The RX-V1800 and RX-V3800 on the other hand, those are hefty receivers.

And as far as Denon is concerned, there's nothing wrong with their lower, middle, and upper end receivers in terms of the amp sections IMO. That said, you can't really go wrong with an upper end model.

Marantz seems to offer consistantly good models in all price ranges as well. And at A4Less they are hard to beat.
The RX-V1065 does count because thats how Yamaha is marketing dispite of the Best Buy feel. Thnaks for supporting my arguement on the 1800 vs 1065 . ;)

Would you guys like a mini-review of the Marantz once I get it?

Sure, but spend some time with it first. There have been instances were I thought more highly of a unit then I did later on. Likewise, there were others I liked better later than I did at first.

By the way, congratulations on the purchase from a Marantz fan! Always a nice thing to save lots of money on last years model (I just did that with a car myself)!

Besides being great, Marantz has one of the best warranties, and you shouldn't have any trouble selling it on Audiogon or something later on if you want to. They have a bit more of a reputation amongst audiophiles and will probably retain more value than the others.
