Ive been looking to get a new TV lately and could really use some help. I basicly set on some kind of DLP 56" or bigger. Id say my price cap would be about $2500 Id really like to say closer to 2000 or less if I could though. Some TV's Ive looked at would be the....
Mitsubishi-WD-65731
Mitsubishi-WD-57731
Toshiba-62HM196
Just so you have an idea of what Im looking at so far. All Ive found out about the ones I listed is that the Mitsu's arent the best for HT beacuse of bad black levels. The Toshiba was rated number 1 by Consumer Reports, but has issues with the lamp, and its 1080p output. Well thats about it, like I said I can really use some input, any is apreciated.

Thank's guys,
Sean

Have you given any thought to Samsung?

I recently bought the 720p 56" (last Sept, HL-S5686W) and I LOVE it.

One small alignment issue (the picture was slightly off center/tilted) was fixed within 8 days of a phone call by a certified samsung tech, all set up by Samsung and at my schedule. He came with a ton of parts for what the problem could have been had it need to be fixed at my place, but it was just a matter of getting into the service menu with the remote (which he showed me how to do after I asked) and adjusting it with the remote, which was quite easy.

2 hdmi, 2 component and the PC input on the back of the TV make it real convenient...my PC looked great on it surprisingly. I had to hook it up out of curiosity alone.

My mother in law has the 1080p 56" of the same model line and it is outstanding. She's had it for nearly 4 months now and has had no issues either.

Neither of us have 1080p stuff going to it (mine cant show it anyway) though, so I can't comment there. I only paid $1400 for mine at the time, where the 1080p model was $2400. The diff wasn't worth $1000 to me, and still isn't. 720p/1080i material looks glorious on my set, even from only 8 feet away (where I normally sit).

Anyway, just thought I'd toss Samsung's name into your choices. When I was researching, they seemed to be the best quality AND customer service response out there. At least it was the vibe I was getting from a few forums.

Good luck.

Ive had Samsung broght to my attention one other time, but it seems when I go to my local store that the Mitsu and the Toshiba look better. I know that looking at the store isnt the greatest way of decideing, but thats all I got. The Samsung, the last time I was at the store seemed really sharp but had odd color, mainly seemed to red. Of courese I know that all it would need is a lil adjustment. The main reason I started with Toshiba and Mitsubishi is basicly brand loyalty. My family has had lots of Toshiba TV's (no projectors) and have always loved them. We do now have a Smasung HDTV (Not a projector) and I could not get it looking as good as my current Toshiba. Mitsu came up because Ive always liked there projectors. I know people who have had a few and have always like them. Ill look into the Samsungs alil more though, thanks for the input. Keep it comming guys.

We have been looking lately. My dad just bought one of the samsungs you listed I beleive. He loves it. My g/f is going to buy the 56" 1080p Samsung. It can be had for around $1700. That's alot left for a nice stand and some other things.

I have a Samsung, and it's solidly built. It's not a projector-type, but I've always recognized Samsung as a company that builds very durable products all around. I don't really know much about Toshibas, so I can't give too much advice there. Oh, and when I first got the TV I noticed as you did that the reds were too high on all the factory picture modes (it made people's faces look really red!). However, I just used the menu to adjust the color levels in the Custom picture mode and the problem has been solved ever since!

I just found this review of the Samsung on CNet; might be worth a read: http://reviews.cnet.com/Samsung_HL_S5687W/4505-6484_7-31783171.html?tag=pdtl-list

Well thanks for the input guys. I actually saw that CNet review yesterday and that why I was giving it a look. But thank you very much for the link. I also noticed that they rate the Mitsu that I listed in my first post as there second to buy. They say the blacks are good on it, Ive heard the opposite. Also the coustomer ratings are higher for the Samsung. Ive noticed that coustomer ratings for the Samsungs have been high eventhough there has been ALOT of reviews (I.E. 88 reviews and a 4.5 star rating as opposed to 9 reviews and a 4.5 rating) No the HL-S5687W compared to the HL-S5688W, whats the main difference. I did a comparison on Samsungs web site and notticed that the High Def is different
87: HDTV w/ Tuner Built-in
88: DNIe,Cinema Smooth Light Engine

The sound ( I dont think I care about this because I ALWAYS run through my reciever)
87: 20-Watt Stereo Audio System
88: 20-Watt Stereo output with SRS TruSurround Sound

Video Enhancement:
87: DNIe®,Photo Viewer Interface,Game Mode
88: Built-In Tuner Brilliant Color®

Other than whats listed its just weight, the 88 has PIP remote and so on. So more or less what Im asking is it woth the $330 difference?? Its not a lot of money I know, espically when spending this much, BUT Im trying to be a lil frugal. Anyway Thanks again for the help so far, Ive gotten a lot of good stuff so far. Keep it comming guys.

The main difference between the 87 and 88 comes into play if you're going to have it calibrated like I suggested. That difference is that on the 87 you cannot turn off overscan permanently while on the 88 you can.

Better?

The Samsung HL-S5688W would be even better. I suggest once you get it, you have it calibrated by an ISF calibrator.
True, the 5688 has more to offer, but only IF you need it. Price on Amazon for this unit is $360 more than the 5687. With the 5688 you get 2 Tuner PIP, IEEE1394 connection and a cable card slot. Again, IF you need them or they are important, OK, but as far as the performance and processiing, no difference. I just bought the 5687 (delivers Wednesday) because I did not need or want those features bad enough to plunk down an additional $360.

What if I get the 87 series and have it professionaly calibrated? Im thinking thats the better Idea cause the money I save will pay for it, and some cables :D I saw both at my local store last night and thought both looked great, and I like the all black front on the 88, BUT I cant justify the extra cost.

Well I went an bought the HL-S5687W yesterday. It wont be here till thursday BUT I got a great price on it IMO. I was on my way to Tiger Direct (We have a local store near me) when I called a buddy of mine who used to work there. He unfortunatly told me that it was 13xx because it was refurbished. So we went to the best buy right down the street any way so the wife to be could actually see the TV in person. I snaged a sales man and just asked if they match ANY price, he asked what price I had in mind. I knew they wouldnt match tigerdirects beacuse it was refurbished, BUT the tv was 1687 on amazon.com He went and checked and said thell do it :D So I paid 1818.81 out the door for a TV that was "on-sale" for 2,099 that day :D Unfortunatly they we out of stock (no supprise It was the day before the BEARS were in the superbowl, and I live near Chicago) So Ill get it thursday. I also order an Oppo 981, Im SOOOOO excited. Ill let you know how it all goes.

Congrats on your purchase.

I got mine last Thursday and I am really liking it so far. I also bought the Yamaha RX-V2700 and the Samsung Blu Ray. For what it's worth the Yamaha is unbelievable. The Blu Ray even with the firmware upgrade is a let down for sure and I am not sure I am going to keep it.

As for the 5687 I am struggling with the SD reception versus my old 720P Samsung DLP. HD is INCREDIBLE however so I guess I'll skip watching SD all together:rolleyes:

Let us know what you think. Sorry to hear you did not get it in time for the Bears game this weekend!
