Why don't you go have a look at what's happening in Eastern Europe? Hungary is not a democracy any more and Poland is going down that road very fast. They are both EU member's btw, and I find it offensive that they receive absolute huge funds from EU.

In democracies (unless a revolution), a democracy dies by a "thousand cuts" where each one is pretty minor but the total of those cuts is death.
