I assume it is a good idea to run my new amp (should get it next week) on a dedicated outlet/breaker...correct?

My nextdoor neighbor is an electrician and said he can do a new run next week so if I need this done; it's a good time to do it.

Let me know.

If you could get the amp on a dedicated breaker why not? You run less likelihood of tripping a breaker when you are drinking and turn the volume up ;).

I wouldn't think it is necessary but it surely can't hurt.

He wont charge me much and since all my gear is on one outlet; I was thinking it should be done. It sounds like you are just giving it a 50/50; I am not dying to spend money on it but if I should; I will.

I agree with avaserfi...if it's easy, why not? However, you probably won't need it.

You're getting the MPS-1, right? How many amp modules did you end up going with?

Greg, you might want to ask Emotiva how much current that amp will draw under normal and "loud" conditions (pretty subjective, I know, but I'm guessing you all could talk through it).

I'll preface this next remark by acknowledging that my Belkin PureAV is not showing peak power draw and is showing more of an average (at least, it sure seems that way to me). That said, while playing a 5.1 concert DVD on my system at what I would consider a loud volume...with my RPA-1 powering the fronts, Pioneer powering the other three speakers, PC13-Ultra going, CRT TV on, and DVD playing...my Belkin shows a current draw of between 2 and 2.5 amps. That's why I'd guess that you don't need it, but as avaserfi said, it sure won't hurt.

I have seen my lights dim during loud bass passages; does that mean anything?

Perhaps they are just paying homage to your system? :D

Yeah, I don't have that happen. Your neighbor could surely tell you if a dedicated breaker would help you out with that. Perhaps you need your sub on a dedicated breaker. :)

Yeah, thats not exactly a good thing.

Is the circuit your running your gear on right now a dedicated circuit or is it for the entire room? If possible I would have him run two dedicated 20A circuits, one for all your digital stuff and tv etc and one for your amplifier and preamp.

If hes running one line its not any harder to do two. I wish I had done two dedicated circuits for my stereo rather than just one, But its certainly better than a shared circuit :D

I also like to use hospital grade plugs, they are about 10 bucks a peice. They are the orange ones at your local lowes or home depot. I dont use them because I think it make the sound better, They are just much higher quality and make a much better connection. I would put them in my entire house if it wasnt for the cost.

It means that on those short peaks it draws your voltage down just a bit but how often will that happen?
Actually, you might see that with a dedicated breaker, unless the lights are on the same circuit as your sub is on.
Ask your neighbor how much is not too much? Remodeling can be surprising and expensive after all.
And, if you do decide, do a 20A circuit.

Interesting:D I seriously doubt he is running more on average. Sure, a bass peak might instantly demand more but, it is very short in duration.:D

My neighbor came over and looked at everything. He said that it should be fine as is but he will hook up some thing-a-ma-jig when I get the amp and make certain that I am ok. He said 50 bucks would cover it if we need to do a new run. I guess it pays to drink with your neighbors!

Yes, it must, obviously:) unless he knows now where to spend more time listening or watching movies:D
Yes, he will hook up a power meter to check your load on that outlet, a good thing to know. Have him check your computer too, I bet it is 150watts an hour, 24/7 is expensive:D
And, for $50, it may be worth it to just DO IT. :D 20A.

That's it.
Note to self: When custom building new house, have one dedicated 20 amp outlet/breaker for each amplifier plus another for all the other components..... Let's see..............so that's a total of 8 breakers for the HT room......oh what the heck, let's make that 9 since it's a lucky number:)

Might be simpler to run the HT off its own meter:D
