Ideally the speaker would be isolated from hard surfaces, the tweeter would be at ear height, and the two speakers would be 45 degrees apart and aimed just behind your seating position.
The hard part is that ideal placement isn't practical for most people. You can place them on silicone rubber stands aimed up at your ears. Or in my case I have shelves in the way so they sit just above me and are aimed down at my ears.
