Alright, I have bday money burning a hole in my pocket and would like to ask opinions on what I should do. I can spend it either on a new receiver (RX-V663) or a PS3. Any opinions would be welcome. Thanks for the feedback.

Mike
I did not notice what speakers you have. If you want an improvement in sound quality, that is the place to spend your money. (Remember, subwoofers are speakers, too.) The PS3 is a good idea if you want to watch Blu-Ray movies, but it is not going to improve your sound. This is Audioholics, after all, not Videoholics, so I am rather surprised that no one else has mentioned this. Are all these people members of the wrong web site?

The yammie would be a solid move for the overall performance of your system. I steered a good friend of mine that was on a budget, but in need of a reciever, to the 661 and he's very happy. I personally wanted to finally have someone I know on PSN to game with;). But I am an Audioholic first!!!:D
The main thing is to look at it from the "What would make me the happiest" perspective, and decide accordingly. Happy hunting!!

You are correct Pyrrho, I really need to get my signature up, but I'm lazy, maybe it'll be up by the time you read this. My speakers are Klipsch all around, B-3 fronts, Sub-10 sub and the remnants of a Quintet III system for the rest. Upgrading these are not an option at the moment (as per WAF). A receiver or the PS3 have passed the current criteria, integrating into our living room without her really noticing them  Other than that, if I had the cash at hand I would just get both, but student loan debt sucks the big one, so I am on a budget til it is gone. Keep the ideas coming, I'm currently leaning towards the PS3 but am not completely sold yet and I would like to make my final decision by Friday or Saturday. Thanks everyone.

Set the PS3 up last night and updated it, I was fearing the worst as far as download speed, but I was pleasantly surprised when it took less than 3 mins to download and update the system. Bought The Fifth Element (one of my fav all time movies) on BD and watched a few choice scenes from it. I only have a 720p TV but it looked stunning. Should be picking up a game today to test it out in that arena, Ratchet and Clank is what I think I'm gonna go with. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Thanks all again.

PS3 is a waste.

Unless you're 13....buy audio gear...will be worth it in the long run!

Not 13, at least I try not to be :D. I'm not a big game player anymore, but I'm excited for GTA IV, but other than that, I'm loving the new BD player, and audio equipment will be soon to follow. Thanks again everyone.

To me, a PS3 is a gaming machine, and all of its other features are secondary. If gaming is what you want, buy one. If audio/video are going to be the only applications, you can do better.

although the PS3 is the better "upgrade" (you get a wireless media server, BD player, gaming console) ... it is inevitable that you upgrade your receiver.

"get into the 90's man!" :)

i vote receiver.
