Alright, I have bday money burning a hole in my pocket and would like to ask opinions on what I should do. I can spend it either on a new receiver (RX-V663) or a PS3. Any opinions would be welcome. Thanks for the feedback.

What receiver do you have now?

Given you have at least a 5.1 receiver and no Blu-ray player (this is an assumption) I can see no reason to get the RX-V663 over the PS3 at this time. You won't get the advantage of HD audio if you don't have a Blu-ray player anyway, so you have much advantage with the RX-V663 (because you won't be able to use those features until you have the PS3 anyway).

Given all that, I recommend the PS3 first. Later, when you can afford a new AVR, they will have more features and power for the price anyway.

It all depends on how much you like games. Not being a gamer myself, I would have no use for a PS3.

Hey Mike,

If you're not a gamer, a PS3 will make an excellent bluray player. If you're into games, you've got the best of both worlds. What receiver do you have now?

PS3 with HDMI connect makes a great BD player and also great game machine.

How old is your receiver? The RX-663 is a very nice receiver. If you don't buy it when will you upgrade?

Depends on what your preferences are :)

Cheers,

P.S.- I am jealous you still get birthday money

Thanks for the responses. Realized as I left the house I didn't post my current receiver  I have a Yamaha 5840, does a nice job, I relatively happy with it other than the lack of HDMI. I do enjoy games but I am looking to trade-in my 360 towards a PS3 if that's the way I decide to go due to the fact that I just don't play too many console games. Any games I would be interested in are on both platforms anyways. I am mainly looking at the unit for it's blu-ray capabilities. This is a temporary decision because I will be getting the loser of this decision within the next 2 months or so. Hope this helps you help me :D

Mike

PS I get the receiver at a significant discount due to my employment at BB, only reason this is even a question, if I were paying full price for the receiver, I would be all over the PS3

upgrade to HDMI .. go for Yamaha AVR now.

I have a simple connection now BD and Satellite (DishNetwork HD 722 DVR) both connected to Marrantz via HDMI, then a single HDMI out to Vizio LCD TV. Both DVD and TV picture and sound are awesome,

Then when you do get PS3 the HDMI interface is very, very nice. Component is just not as good.

P.S. - I briefly had the PS3 connected via HDMI through Marantz to TV (PS3 detects HDMI and goes through nice auto-setup); Very Very nice. :) It is now upstairs in media room as a gaming machine connected to 55" Mitsubsishi Diamond through component; very good but not the same. The Mitsubsihi doesn't have HDMI input only Y, Ra, Rb.

Cheers,

I vote for the PS3, you will get the immediate advantage in PQ, and assuming you will still be working for BB in the future you can get the receiver in a couple of months to get the full advantage of Blu-ray. I see no reason why you should get the Yamaha RX-V663 now just so you have to wait to get any advantage from Blu-ray. The HTR-5840 will get you very good sound over the Optical output on the PS3 (at least as good as SPDIF will allow) which should be top notch. You can still use the HDMI connection to your display while using the optical output to go to the AVR.

IMO, this is a no brainer.

I would say your preference of HDMI is skewed, being that you used component on one display and HDMI on another. If you try both on the same display you could come up with a better comparison. I seriously doubt there is much difference in PQ between HDMI and component with the PS3.

This is however irrelevant, as the OP can use HDMI directly to the display until he gets the receiver and he will get all the benefits from Blu-ray short of HD audio (5.1 over SPDIF is still very good).

Should have put this up there sooner, if I use component from the PS3 am I going to be happy for the time being? I have only 1 HDMI input so I would run a component cable through my receiver. Thanks again.

What are you using with HDMI at the moment?

Pioneer Elite upconvert DVD player, don't really want to give that up and make the ps3 the only transport

You should try out the PS3 for upscaling, it might outperform the Pioneer assuming you have the latest firmware updates (2.20 is the latest). A lot of people are saying the PS3 is great for scaling, better than most other Blu-ray players.

it's not so much the fact of using the PS3 for it's abilities, it's the fact that the wife will go ape nuts if I don't use the dvd player, I just got it 2 months ago or so. :D

Oh, so you will have to sacrifice quality for the wife. That's gotta bite a little.

You could give this a shot, just watch movies on the Pioneer Elite that you don't necessarily care about the PQ, such as comedies or chick flicks.:D

So what your trying to say is you don't think one of the best upconverting DVD players on the market will upscale as well as a PS3. In the interest in fairness I will do an a/b comparison with something picture heavy, like Cars or some other Pixar yumminess. For some reason I feel they are going to be reasonably comparable since I have a 32" LCD 720p TV, but I am willing to give it a try and see what I like. Thanks as always for the feedback.

Mike

PS. I can control the Pio with my Harmony, that's a big step especially when the wife only knows how to use the macro buttons for "Watch a DVD"

If you have the PS3 connected to the net, you can finally have this forum where it belongs! On your system!! The built in browser is a little wonky at times, but audioholics runs great on it.:D

Indeed it does.:D

The scaling the PS3 should get better in the future as well (assuming the firmware upgrades handle that, previous ones have).
