Questions on connections

So I am working on getting a new receiver and my Display only has component and DVI. I've seen HDMI to DVI cables and wonder if I can run HDMI from my PS3 to a receiver and then go HDMI to DVI to the display? Does the HDMI type effect this or does it even matter? Should I just stick to running component to the display and allow the PS3 to run Audio only into the receiver via HDMI and VID by Component?

Side: With $650 which receiver would you pull the trigger on?

DVI is video only so you need the separate audio connection regardless of whether you use HDMI->DVI or just stick with component video.

The only issue with using component video is whether or not the PS3 can output 1080p over component (I don't have one and don't know). If it can, then I'd use component. If it will only output 1080p via HDMI and 1080p is something you need then I'd go HDMI->DVI. The version of HDMI doesn't matter - all the adapter does is line up the pins on the HDMI connector that are for video with the same pins on the DVI connector.

Just remember many DVD units both HD and SD will only upsample via HDMI or DVI wire in older models so make sure if you intend to upsample a standard def DVD and only have comp video hook up you understand its limitations. Also only HDMI or multi-channel analog bypass inputs (with internal decoder on player) will allow you to take full advantage of the state of the art Audio formats........Toslink or Coax digital will only give you the digital audio we have been useing for years.

DVI passes video only, no audio. Assuming you get a receiver that processes the new audio formats from a PS3 rather than a pass-through receiver, then you want to go HDMI to your receiver and HDMI to DVI cable to your TV. You still have to send audio to your TV for the times when you don’t want to fire up the surround sound. You should be able to do this by running RCA cables from the PS3 to the back of your TV. If you have other devices such as a satellite box, then it is best to run all devices to your receiver for switching and then RCA to the TV. You have to keep the receiver volume low and then you can use the TV volume control.
