Question regarding Yamaha V540 Receiver

Hi there, I am new to this forum, but have thoroughly enjoyed reading the postings you guru's have posted.

Quick question regarding my Yamaha RX-V540 receiver. It says it is a 6.1 capable receiver, but on the back, there seems to only be outputs for the 5 speakers and sub. How would I get 6.1 sound? Is the 6.1 only "created" with effects or is it physically possible to have 6.1 speakers on this receiver? Is it even worth going from 5.1 to 6.1 if this is possible? The speakers I am using are Energy - Take 5's, which I believe are disco'ed now.

I love this receiver and get great (by my standards, not most of yours) sound for my movies from it.

Thanks for your help!

If it says it is 6.1 capable, then it should be able to decode a 6.1 format like Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES. If there are only 5 speaker outputs, then it could either:

1. Require you to use an external amplifier connected to a pre-out on the receiver to get the 6th channel.
2. Playback the 6.1 format over 5.1 speakers. This is not as bad as it sounds, because the 6th channel is matrixed into the side surround channels anyway. Without having seen the manual, I bet this is the correct option.

Hey Tryguy. The 540 is definitely 6.1 capable. Looking at the back panel, there is a section called "Speakers". On the left hand side of this section, you'll see A and B speakers for the main left and rights. On the right hand side you'll see rear surround for left and right. On the bottom of this is an input for a centre, and beside that, an input for a rear centre. There's your 6.1.

I think what you were looking at was the section marked "6 Ch Input". That's where you would connect for high resolution audio like SACD and DVD-A.

cheers,

Further question...

...thanks much for your help thus far. I apologize for being an idiot about this, but I thought I had the RX540, but I have the RX530. This still says it can do 6.1, but I don't see the jack on the back that you mentioned. I have attached the diagram from the user manual.

Thanks again for your assistance.

That is a 5.1 receiver only. You cannot use a 6.1 setup with that receiver.

There are only 5 speaker binding posts on it, just as you said initially. I tried to find the manual for it on the Yamaha site but could not. If the manual says it is 6.1 capable it will also describe how to utilize 6.1 and it will be one of the two options I gave before.

Ahhhhhh

That makes sense. I thought it might be an effect based on their use of the word Matrix.

Thanks

To sum it up. It is only 5.1 and it matrixes the 6.1 to the surrounds for the "phantom" rear channel.
