question regarding upconverting

When a standard progressive DVD player passes a 480p output to an HD display, does the display itself "upconvert" to 720p or 1080i? Is this upconversion any different than what an upconverting DVD player does? Do DVD players do this task better than the displays do?

Is it better to have a DVD player with higher quality DACs output 480p to the display, and let the display upconvert, or is it better to have an upconverting DVD player, maybe with a lower quality output, but already at 720p or 1080i? Or am I just looking at this wrong? Thanks in advance.

some displays will upconvert to 720p or 1080i some will not. Essintially its doing the same thing, now which one has the better converters will vary with the equipment too.

Thanks, Spiffy. I have a Panasonic TH-50PHD7UY 50" plasma display on order, and I am fairly sure that it will convert all inputs to 720p (it's native display). I guess the question is, does this panel upconvert as well as the upconverting DVD players. Has anyone who ones this panel compared 480p inputs to 720p inputs, to see if there is much difference?

Well since each upconverting dvd player is going to upconvert using different hardware and software with a different level of quality, I think you would have to try them on your individual TV and see which one has the better upconverting processing. Unless someone else out there has your same display and has already tried this.

Twere me, I'd purchase a lower priced, good quality, progressive scan player and run it over component to the display.....and enjoy myself immensely until the (possible) advent of the HD players become a reality.
