I myself don't know my A** from a hole in the ground when it comes to upscaling DVD players. But I am doing research for a friend of mine.

Does he have to use HDMI to get the full potential on this unit, or will Componant be good enough? And are these things set to do every thing automatically, or will he have to navigate a menu to get it upconvert/scale?

Thanks

Most upconverting players only do it via HDMI. There are a few that do it over component. No, it may not do upconversion automatically, you will likely have to at least set it up initially via the menus. VIA HDMI, it may be able to do a "check" that verifies what is the highest signal a particular set is capable of.

Personally, I'd skip Sony when it comes to less expensive progressive DVD players.
