Question on music volumne via HTPC

I am feeding WMA files from my HTPC to my receiver via an HDMI cable from an ATI 5570 HD via card, but noticed that all music sent this way requires me to turn the volume up on my receiver much higher than when playing internet radio from receiver or playing Pandora or Radio Paradise from HTPC. Is there a setting that I have missed or is using the HGMI from a video card a reason for requiring more power from a receiver for a given level of loudness?

That question may be a tad inarticulate, but it seems odd to have to turn the volume up so much higher to hear the ripped music files. Any insight would be appreciated, thanks.
