Question about Yamaha Aventage RX-V681BL Display

Can the front panel display on the Yamaha Aventage RX-A860BL be turned all the way off? Not just dimmed down, but turned COMPLETELY off? I'm talking about the front panel display on the unit itself. I looked but I don't see any dimmer button on the front of the unit or on the remote control.

I do not want this unit if there is no way of shutting off the front panel display. Some A/V receivers displays will turn off automatically when Pure Direct is used, but I haven't been able to find anything on that with the Yamaha's.

Probably not. What does the manual say? My avrs (non-Yamahas) have dimmer features but no complete off without pure direct mode (which is kinda useless IMO). Black piece of cardboard and some tape perhaps would solve the issue....

No, it's not useless. I never want to stare at a lit display when listening to music or watching movies. The less lights the better.

I would never but tape or anything that would mar the finish of the unit, not to mention it would look ghetto. ALL AVR's, CD and Blu-Ray players should be able to shut off the display on all functions if you wanted to. The new Sony AVR's can do this, it's just too bad the rest of the unit is junk.

I meant pure direct is useless. I don't have an issue on my gear with the lights, its set to the side and not in my line of sight. I did use some black cardboard on some too bright amp lights, you can't tell from any distance that it is "ghetto". Tape adhesive comes off easily enough, it won't do any permanent damage IME. You'll just have to buy the unit that satisifies you with pictures of its innards and lights that turn off completely....

I currently have black electrical tape on more than 1 item sitting on my HT shelf (router, modem, etc). If you do a nice clean job with it, then you won't even notice it. I can tell you that on my setup, you won't see it, even when you are looking for it. The last time that I had a TWC tech in my house, the first thing he said is "your modem isn't working" b/c he couldn't see any lights and he couldn't see the black tape on it either.

I do agree, it isn't the ideal solution, but it can be done in a manner that is not conspicuous by any means.

Luckily, my Pio Elite AVR does have the option that the display goes off completely like 5 seconds after the last input.

I am also a person that really detests bright lights on my HT stack. Another option could be to open up the AVR and disconnect the wiring to the display. If you are lucky, it may even have a quick connect terminal that you can simply unplug. Wouldn't be the first time that I have done that either, or completely removed an offending LED. Again, not really ideal but gets the job done.

I have a vertical audio rack with the units out in the open so everything is in my line of sight. What is most annoying are CD/Blu-Ray players with a moving clock display that you can't turn off completely. I refuse to buy such players and it's frustrating if the manuals are unclear if the displays can be turned off or not and no one seems to care or is able to answer the simple question. This is a simple feature really that ALL units should have. In fact, there is a very slight improvement in performance if these lights are turned off. That is why they go off when Pure Direct is on, but so far no one has been able to answer whether the Yamaha's do this.

Yep, and those units tend to be the better 2-channel amps and stand alone CD players. It's not all about sound quality with me, but looks and features as well. The ability to shut off displays is an important one for me.
