Question about multi-media ethernet appliances

Unless I'm wrong, I don't see a forum here specifically devoted to appliances or devices that route or broadcast A/V material over ethernet networks.

I'm wondering if there's anything that can take local A/V material (audio/video/satellite/cable signals) and stream them either to another location within your house, or to a remote system or computer via the internet.

For example, let's say that I'm in a hotel on a business trip, and I want to use my laptop to access my "home media server" and instruct it to tune to the cable channel of my local TV broadcaster so I can watch my local (home) 11 pm newscast, and then later tell the media server to show me the camera feed from my front door CCTV camera. Is there any device that will do that?

I'm also curious as to the exact functionality of the network connectivity that is possible with the A/V receivers that are now coming with network (ethernet) jacks. What exactly can you do with them over the network?
