Hello there,

I own a Onkyo tx-sr608 and when i select different sound formats like dolby digital, dts, DTS HD etc. i cant hear the difference. For example with my old receiver when i selected DTS everything sounded more clearer and volume was harder then dolby digital. Now every sound format sound the same and plays at the same volume. I tried disableing Dynamic EQ and Dynamic volume, audio output on auto but it didnt help.

I must say i use 2 different hdmi 1.3 cables. The one from my receiver too the tv is gold plated and the one from my receiver too the dvd is a standard one.

I red the manual but could find my answer i hope you can help me with this weird issue.

Thx for reading my question.

How have you configured the output of your player?

Its on direct so the receiver does all the decoding.

What do you mean by direct? That is an analog setting in the receiver.

You should have your player set to output bitstream. Then your receiver should set to the highest definition available from the disc automatically.

i only can use mixed or direct in the menu. Was understanding when choicing mixed the player will do the decoding and direct the receiver. Or maybe i dont understand it right :)

ps. I got the sony bdp-s360 player.

I don't have time to download your manual. But there has to be a screen that lets you set output to PCM or bitstream. You need bitstream. Please look at your manual.

Go to page 44 of your manual. Select audio set up. Under HDMI select Auto.

Unfortunately your player has not manual override. The player and receiver communicate and decide on correct output. I just hope it does. If not you need a better BD player.

That player does not even decode the loss less codecs, only Dolby digital. You had better hope that the Onkyo auto selects a bitstream output. Make good and sure you do not select down mix, otherwise the player will only output 2 channel PCM and your surround experience will be old fashioned Dolby pro logic.

If the Onkyo recognized Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD, you are almost certainly hearing them.

What are your speakers? A lot of speakers do not have the resolution to benefit from the loss less codecs.

Funny, the instruction manual only mentions Dolby Digital. If you select HDMI and set to auto you should be good.

Personally I like the Oppo BD 83.

I hope this isn't too far off topic...but...

What I actually find with my 605 -- which is (one of) the predecessor(s) to your 608 -- is that I cannot tell any difference whatsoever between the lossless DTS-HD Master Audio tracks and their core DTS signal brethern, off the same disc...and I have demoed at least a dozen titles already to confirm this...

When I was running my first generation Blu-ray player, a Panasonic BD10A (which is the predecessor -- or one of them -- to the Panny deck the OP is looking to get), the player didn't support Master Audio at all, so it would strip the core DTS signal from these soundtracks and send them bitstreamed to my 605. I have since replaced the Panasonic with an OPPO BDP-83 which bitstreams the full lossless Master Audio codecs to the 605, but I cannot hear ANY difference between the core DTS extraction and the full lossless extensions of these same soundtracks. Perhaps we're not supposed to hear them or maybe I am not running "premium" enough gear  but that's what I experience.

Don't even get me started on the lossy/lossless thing -- I don't think lossless is everything the studios cracked it up to be. Sure, some DVD soundtracks have improved dynamics on the subtle side on some titles, but for the most part I do not experience a night and day difference between the new lossless codecs and the legacy lossy variants i.e. Dolby Digital & DTS.

Well I can assure that in this studio the superior sound quality of the loss less codecs is dramatic.

Opera for one is not even listenable in lossy codecs, which is why opera DVDs, also contain a loss less two channel PCM track

Now with Blue Ray we can enjoy them with multichannel audio.
