subwoofers again

1) is the martin logan grotto better at music than movies?
2) is the velodyne cht/dls better at movies than music?
3) should i buy the velodyne now, save for a long time and then buy a Martin Logan grotto -OR- wait, save some more and THEN buy the ML grotto?

What's this have to do with the Subsonic6?

that was the original content of this thread ...
the subsonic 6 was cheaper than the velodyne i was considering, but i could not find the specs ... so i posted this thread. when i DID find the specs, i didnt like it and then changed the content of the thread thinking that i could change the title of the thread by editing.

apparently not.

The Subsonic6i was compared to a number of other Subs in Sound & Vision's Sept 2004 issue. It beat the competion hands down including Outlaw's LFM. It played the loudest and the lowest and the best part was, it had the most uniform frequency spectrum of all of the subs. This last aspect makes me believe its not just a one note boomer like so many subs out there but that its very musical. This uniform frequency spectrum also allows it to more readily integrated into a room and into an existing HT system. Don't go by specs alone. Audition one and find out for yourself. Numbers never ever tell the whole story.. Oh and make sure its the Subsonic6i and not its predecessor, the Subsonic6. Big differences between the two in terms of perfoamnce and sound. Good luck

PSB is extremely conservative with their specs. I had the PSB S6 for a short while and it was a great sub.

thanks 3db

i was looking for that sub face off ... but the sound and vision mag website is pretty hard to navigate.

"i" so thats why i saw different specs, i WAS turned off from the one without an "i" (will check for an "i" hopefully its the cheap one)

that store has the subzero, subsonic 6 (i?) and the martin logan grotto ...
even a high end velodyne (that i wont even look at)

so it was the one without the "i" how do you compare it with other subs? what other subs do/did you use? (for reference)

Unfortunately S&V doesn't have that comparison available

I have that issue at home but I can't get it online for some reason. I think the 6i will be consdireably more expensive than the 6 as its a newer design. I think the 6 is cheaper because they are trying to get rid of old stock .

so the subseries 6i and the subsonic 6i is one and the same?

what about the fact that its freq. range is just 29-150Hz? does that mean it doesnt go low?

I tried the Psb ss 6 an d it was great. I got the Hsu STF 3 for the same price and the Hsu is about 50% better...not to say the Psb is bad, the Hsu is THAT good.

well i went to see the ML grotto and the PSB subsonic 6.

the grotto was connected via CD player - power amp - sub - speakers.
he had an incredible amount of difficulty making the thing work. (says ML was fussy) there might be something wrong with the unit OR he did something wrong with the setup (what audio salesman is dumb enough to do the setup above wrong?) he says the sub needs a "special" gold plated wye rca for it to work on the LFE (so i wasnt able to test it on movies). err?

the PSB subsonic 6 (no i) wont even pass my MAF let alone WAF.

i also looked at the JM lab chorus series 10 incher. the price was too much for something that says does 40hz-1++hz

Mike, did they have the subsonic6i there? Is it out of your alotted budget? have you tried the subsonic5i? Its the 10" version.. won't go as deep as the 6i. I own the older subsonic5 and I'm very pleased with its perfromance. Watcheed episode 3 of Star Wars and made my basement slider window rattle *heh heh heh*

nope, only the subsonic 6 was there. i think the only reason it was IN my budget was because it was an old model. im kinda looking for a sub that gets low though ... movies and all.

velodyne flip flop

blast. they're selling me the
dd-10 for 1785USD
SPL-1200R for 1500USD
SPL-1000R for 1232USD

should i sell my soul and get a "better" sub? or will the DLS/CHT be good enough for a 99% movie watcher

the ones you listed are going to give you cleaner bass. Its all about how much you want to spend. The SPL series are very nice sounding subwoofers, But you may not like them for HT. The THD is greater in the DLSR with makes them sound louder lower down. The SPL1200II, I think, is a great all round subwoofer.

theres a review here
http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/loudspeakers/Velodyne_SPL-1200_SeriesII_p1.html

The SPL-R series improves upon the origonal series with auto EQ and remote.
