PS3 vs Blu-ray player

I just bought a $50 repair master 5 year warranty for my PS3 to make sure it lasts at least 5 years. Good deal since I game and watch a lot of movies with it. Sony planned on this one being both a gaming and movie machine thus all the support it's getting with firmware updates. The PS2 did have those issues though. It was not meant for movie watching, but did allow for it.

The PS3 cannot bitstream Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital TrueHD, or DTS-HD via HDMI because of hardware limitations. The DTS-HD processing has not been added to the PS3 yet, but apparently it's capable of decoding it internally with a firmware update that has yet to be released. The PS3 has to decode the HD formats internally and convert them to PCM for output. You wouldn't be able to utilize the HD audio decoders on the newer HDMI 1.3 receivers that have Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, and DTS-HD decoders. You can still get that same fidelity though, it's just converted to uncompressed multichannel PCM which even the HDMI 1.1 repeating receivers and pre/pros can decode.:)
Perfect for my 661 then, don't need bitstream. Does it bitstream regular DD and DTS like HD DVD does? That's what I am used to with the A2.

So basically PS3 cannot output bitstream audio as compared to the coming soon dedicated BD players which would be able to.

Its just a hassle running six rca's for something that could have been done with one HDMI with the correct equipment:)rolleyes:like the Emo lmc-2,HDMI 1.3)

Thats 1 point for BD dedicated player for those of whom this feature really matters like me.

How come am I able to get TrueHD/LPCM sound and picture from my PS3 with only one HDMI cable then?

My bad , I think it converts it to uncompressed audio and sends it via hdmi.
But i think it does not ouput bitstream.

The only negative thing I have heard about the PS3 as a Blu-ray player is that it wears out relatively quickly with heavy movie use (7-8 BD movies a week). Other than that it is a stellar unit.

It may not be "bullet-proof" but the PS3 has expereinced a very, very low failure rate.

It does output bitstream. Just not TrueHD or DTS-MA.......
Ok lets clear the confusion.

So it outputs bitstream's via HDMI :- DD+, DTS, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio

It does support Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio{after firmware update} but will convert them to LPCM and output them on HDMI

Someone who owns a PS3 please confirm...

i think you all know by now that the ps3 does infact send bitstream audio out.
it all was in a firmware update. it can send it through an hdmi cable or a fiber optic wire.

and as for the br player wearing out it will not wear out from watching movies on it.

it is more robust then the dvd red laser.

Welcome to Audioholics. We mean bitstream audio of high res audio codecs (Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR)--not Dolby Digital, DDEX, DTS, etc.

I'm curious where you read that these Blu-Ray drives were most robust and reliable than DVD drives. I'd love to see that data.

Again, welcome to Audioholics!

It does NOT bitstream the new lossess HD audio. You have to send it out of the PS3 as multichannel PCM. If you bitsteam, the best you will get will be plain-ol Dolby Digital.

Just wondering, does the PS3 come with a remote? I am thinking o getting one also but don't want to have to buy a remote extra.

It comes with a game controller. A non-backlit Bluetooth remote with typical DVD style buttons is like $18-23 more depending on where you shop. If you want to use an IR Universal remote, there are various adapters available for about $40.

On the subject of remotes...
Will a universal type remote control all the features on the blu ray, or do you have to use the game paddle to control your movies?

The ps3 doesnt have IR, so you can't directly control it with a universal remote.

If you get a wave bird ir remote for the PS3 and you can use the ir adapter with a universal remote. But you will lose the ability to eject or shutdown.
You can get an adapter like the IR2BT and shutdown and eject with a universal remote... But they are about $150.
