my real problem is the changing of the channel levels by themselves.

I currently use HDMI for audio and video on the DVD player. (I wished I could do the 1 cable solution)
So if you watch a dvd then go to the ps3 and watch a movie the levels change which can be fixed by the screen I showed you, but you are saying after going from dvd to ps3 then back to dvd the channel levels aren't what the were the first time on the dvd player?

its the channel levels that change, not the input levels (everything except the front left and right channels change)

yup, it's like the denon resets or something whenever I switch the HDMI sources.

Thats very odd, I haven't had that problem. Ill look into it more this weekend maybe tomorrow some as well depending on how studying goes. Have you contacted denon?

are both your sources connected via HDMI? do you use a digital cable for the oppo or do you use HDMI for audio?

I use hdmi for both without problem. Do your actual loudness settings (the ones that are shown when you run your speakers test, pink noise) change everytime you do this switch? Or do no settings change just the readings on your SPL?

both the actual and settings on the receiver change.

for example, I leave the center channel at +8.5db, when the switch thing happens, the center jumps to -10db
now that I think about, is there some sort of denon function that pushes back the channel levels when volumes are pushed high?

just to clarify, your oppo is NOT using any digital audio connection (optical, coaxial), only HDMI right?

Ps3 is only using HDMI and so is the Oppo and I have not had this problem with my 3806. Have you tried playing the dvd player on lower levels switching to the ps3 then back? I haven't heard of this feature but you might be right and that would be a way to test it.

edit:I just skimmed through your manual and see nothing on the subject of lowering the volume automatically if levels are too high. I would do that test I mentioned earlier just to see if it is anytime you go from dvd to ps3 and back or only at higher volumes.

One other thing to look into. I would recommend checking your dvd player settings. Is it set to output bitstream? Mine is, also I would look through the PS3 output settings and make sure everything it is outputting is supported by your receiver. Just double checking to make sure its not something elses fault.

If this all doesnt work out I'll just have to make another phone call for you, won't I? ;)

i think my DVD player is set to either PCM output OR auto (will check)

I'll try the ff. when I get home:

-up the gain on the amps so I can lower the db trims on the receiver

-use an optical cable for the DVD player's audio

Let me know how it goes, also I would switch the dvd player to bitstream just in case, your receiver will do just as good a job processing everything as the player and since its old school regular dvds there won't be anything it can't handle.

got home over the lunch break.

i messed with the amp levels and reset the channel trims for LCR to only +3db max. (before it was +8-9db)

i didn't install the optical cable yet, I hope the settings hold this time.

oh, and this time the DVD was much louder than the PS3, so I -4db'ed the input level of the DVD

Well I hope it works for you. Did you change the dvd player settings to bit stream? Also, why do you think its an HDMI issue? It could be I am just curious why you are leaning towards that. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Just hope I helped you some :D

the only choices for HDMI audio out was:
LPCM 2 ch
LPCM 5.1ch
auto
off

I chose auto (from the start)

I was leaning towards the HDMI problem because this DVD player is capable of messing the picture of my LCD display (sometimes), for example the entire picture would be off center, I'd have to turn everything off to get it fixed again. if it could do it to my vid, I figure it could do it to my sound :)

I remember someone mentioning that if the channel trims of a denon was too high, the max master volume would come down ... I guess it wasn't the HDMI's fault (I think. and I hope so)

I don't even know why I do this to myself. it took me awhile to master the yamaha menus. then I switched to HK. it took me sometime again to master the HK OSD. then I switch to denon. sigh. if this gets fixed, I'm sticking with denon. the 3808 is looking mighty attractive.

The denon is just annoying because of the manual youll get used to it but if you upgrade to the 3808 you should send me the 2807 ;). I would leave the dvd on auto, after looking at the manual that seems your best bet (stupid panny site made me sign up to get to it). It sounds like it might be more the dvd player than the receiver because of the video problem you had. I tried looking for the channel trim auto decrease feature in a 2807 manual and didn't find one but it seems odd that they would do that I don't know why I think so though.

What exactly do you have your master volume set to though? If it is set to high according to the manual in certain surround modes it cant go as high (page 23 of the manual)

I have the denon 2307 (lower than the 2807)
and the Pioneer DV696

my master volume is currently around 0db, with the amps gain pretty low (before) I could go as high as +15 to +20 I think

Well damn me that helps I thought you had the 2807 I guess I have been looking at the wrong manual! I did check out the right dvd player though.

Same situation with the 2307 manual so not a big deal. Is there anyway you could hook a different DVD player up via HDMI to test your theory on it being the dvd player?
