two questions....

Will my PS3 read/decode/play DTS-HD and/or Dolby TrueHD?

If so...does my AVR need to be able to process those same formats or will the PS3 send it to the AVR via HDMI cable that it can process on it's own?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Yes it will decode the new audio formats. But it is probably a good idea to get a receiver that can do it too. since most of the better receivers actually do it. For brands look at Onkyo, Marantz, Yamaha, Denon

It will decode it but send the signal via HDMI as PCM lossless and not bitstream. Although there is no difference in sound quality, yor receiver will not say TruHD but say Multichannel instead.

The PS3 will decode HD audio but it will only send it out as PCM. It will not send bitstream HD audio. There's no point worrying about whether the AVR will decode HD audio as long as you are using the PS3. Most receivers will recognize and play the PCM signal from the PS3 and the AVR display will read "multichannel" or some other message like that instead of showing DTS-HD or True-HD. It should be the same signal but the receiver just won't display it as such.

How will I know whether or not the AVR I buy will in fact recognize the PCM signal coming from the PS3?

You will hear a soundtrack with your pretty pictures.:D

Virtually all new receivers play PCM and from my understanding, they will basically play any PCM signal they receive without the need to decode. If you will continue to use the PS3, any HDMI equipped AVR should work.

I reason I am concerned about this is that I am in the market for a surround sound system but I don't have the budget for a top of the line AVR. I was thinking of going with the Sony HT-SS2300 as an all-in-one setup. I know it's probably not optimal, but it looks like it has what I need. I was concerned that it didn't decode the formats listed above. What do you guys think about that system as a budget surround package? I will be using my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player, running it through the Sony AVR and into a Panasonic Plasma.

At 300 dollars you don't have many options so a HTIB may be what you want. However I must say that you will get better sound through a non hd audio system that has great speakers than an hd system with lower quality speakers.

At your budget I suggest this for the fronts
http://www.thespeakercompany.com/LCR1-P-Series-Home-Theater-Front-Speakers-P39C6.aspx $120

http://www.thespeakercompany.com/P5-PR-525-2-way-Bookshelf-Speaker-Pair-P42C6.aspx $70

http://store.audioholics.com/product/1974/20/dayton-sub-120-12--150-watt-powered-subwoofer $150

And an Panasonic HE100 goes cheap on ebay these days for about 80. You can upgrade the receiver to a better one as you get the funds.

For HTIB Onkyo has the best sounding ones IMO. so keep that in mind.

What's your budget for a system?
