If your cooling fan is dirty most likely your lens is also dirty. Try cleaning it with a lens cleaning disc that will brush off the dirt on the lens. If all looks clean, then it might need a lens replacement. That, you need to send it out for repair.

Just an opinion ....

It just crossed my mind since you said that you don't know too much about PS3,aren't you trying to play the BD DVD form a different section but VIDEO ?!?...
Are you sure you're on VIDEO not on AUDIO , GAMES or whatever?

haven't tried a cleaning thing, but after some online research ... it looks like a dead lens that happens to ... 1-3% of all PS3's. who's murphy? it's mike's law. if something can go wrong, it will happen to me.

local gray market. no replacement there. :(
I know I am being very dishonest here but for a PS3, I would do it. Go to your local B&M store, buy a new one. Then swap your PS3s (your old one into the box) and bring it back, keeping the new one @ home.

Gosh, I was about to post a thread about me having my first job as a policeman in my city on march 10th... shame on me but heh... lol

haha, as evil as I am, it wouldn't be right ... :D

there are stores that sell the ps3's here with warranty, but would you believe SONY philippines have yet to release the PS3 here? so there are ABSOLUTELY no official SONY parts for the PS3.

there are gray market parts though and i was quoted 120 bucks to replace the lens with a 1 week warranty.

tarub, bought a lens cleaner today, i won't be opening it up, but I will try the lens cleaner before sending it off for repair.

ok here's what I did ... and why:

a new 40gb PS3 is 530USD over here ...

so I had my PS3 repaired for 120USD, I figure if it dies in a month, I'd use the 400 bucks extra from buying a new one to buy a 399CAD unit from Canada = 520 bucks!

i asked my bro to bring it to the repair place, and the lens was replaced and it ran fine in the store ... my bro will bring it back to me tom. for a testing here.

yeah, found a 60 dollar lens online over there but + shipping and wait time + labor of replacing it, I chose the 120 dollar route.

yup, lens cleaner didn't work ... i just found out how "almost" snake oil the lens cleaner discs are. :)

apparently I'm in the 1% minority with the busted lens. i gotta buy some lottery tickets.

and the 120 USD POS

built-in flash

with 430EX and omnibounce

sorry about the test pics ... those were my first pics with the outboard flash :)

oh, the repair guy said that this was not a 1% thing ... he replaces at least 3 per day he said, and there were other stores who'd replace the same thing for half the price albeit at 1 week warranty. (mine has a one month warranty)

yeah... the guy at the rental store told me that he had to replace his too. movies were skipping chapters like crazy. I've had mine for 3 weeks now and it's been flawless so far. apparently those players are cheap built.
